Iraq's Preliminary Election Results Are Being Released

Maliki Leads in Early Iraq Vote Count -- Wall Street Journal

BAGHDAD—Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was leading the vote count in two Shiite provinces in the southern part of the country, according to preliminary parliamentary election results released by Iraq's electoral commission Thursday.

The results were the first tallies to be released in Iraq's historic elections, which took place last Sunday. Thursday's announcement by the nation's Independent High Electoral Commission showed the State of Law political coalition led by Mr. Maliki is leading in Babil province by nearly 14,000 votes and in Najaf by 7,000, the Associated Press reported.
