Gordon Brown fired the starting gun for a May 6 general election today and immediately set off on the campaign trail in an effort to win Labour an unprecedented fourth term in power.
But as an unusually sunny Mr Brown laughed and chatted with staff at a Morrisons supermarket in Rochester, Kent, a senior Liberal Democrat prompted intrigue back in Westminster when he appeared to hint that Labour might have to ditch their leader in the event of a hung parliament.
