It recreates the sights and sounds of warfare, the smells of an Afghan bazaar and even death comes with a jolt. The latest in virtual reality, shown to The Times recently, is a wargame video program played inside a headset — a Darth Vader-like helmet and visor — and designed to immerse a soldier or Marine several thousands of miles from Afghanistan as completely as possible. Various combat scenarios are fed into the headset and the wearer is expected to react.
