How Do You Survive In A War Zone With No Military Training? -- Quora Contributor, Slate

This question originally appeared on Quora.

Hi, I am Mark, and I am from Ukraine. We had around 40,000 troops mobilized due to the threat of military invasion from Russia. I wasn't mobilized, but if Russia attacks, I will volunteer anyway. Our government doesn't supply its soldiers with anything but an AK-47, a few mags, and military clothes—no gear.

I have never been in a service, and I have never had any kind of military training. For all that I know, there is a possibility I will be in a ditch shooting at Russians in a couple of weeks. I am asking anyone who had any military training for advice on how to survive during wartime. Thank you.

Answer by Daniel Kearns, former paratrooper, 82nd Airborne Division:

My Comment: I asked my father the same question when I was young .... my father served in the Soviet Army for four years in the Second World War .... and his answer was almost identical to what Daniel Kearns is saying in this post. Read it all .... and hope that you are never find yourself in such a position.

The Man Behind The Australian Commando Integrated Combat Package

KILLER COMMANDO: America Poaches Australia's Toughest Man -- News.com.au

* Paul Cale to train special forces in US
* Aussie commando strangled Taliban commander
* 'We train people like we train dogs'

BEING forced to strangle a Taliban commander during hand-to-hand combat drove one of the country's most elite warriors to change the way our special forces train for modern warfare.

Australian Commando Paul Cale, an elite soldier from 2 Commando Regiment, created a world-leading close-quarter fighting course after he was caught in a "scuffle" during a night mission while on deployment to Afghanistan in 2007.

This is the first time he has been publicly identified.

"We made entry on some compounds where Taliban leadership was," he said.

"They basically hid where there were little holes in the wall and we had to clear that, then the next minute they were on top of us so it became a hand-to-hand battle.

Virtual Training Is The Future Of Military Training

Death Comes With A Jolt As Virtual Training For Troops Gets Real -- Times Online

It recreates the sights and sounds of warfare, the smells of an Afghan bazaar and even death comes with a jolt. American troops have begun to use the most complex combat simulator so far created and the Pentagon hopes that it will transform the training of American forces being sent to the battlegrounds of Helmand and beyond.

The latest in virtual reality, shown to The Times recently, is a wargame video program played inside a headset — a Darth Vader-like helmet and visor — and designed to immerse a soldier or Marine several thousands of miles from Afghanistan as completely as possible. Various combat scenarios are fed into the headset and the wearer is expected to react. He can use the replica M204 grenade launcher or a machinegun that he carries, each programmed to display a realistic effect.

My Comment: Give a few more years, I will not be surprised to see this being marketed to gamers.
