The U.S. intends to continue playing a “leading role in supporting a just and sustainable international order” according to the 2010 U.S. National Security Strategy. That's essential. Yet, America no longer succeeds as an international lone ranger. Nor do positive outcomes always result from the U.S. operating mainly with England and France as its two permanent allies on the UN Security Council and Israel as its constant companion in the Middle East. Special relationships with longtime friends must be sustained. At the same time, broad international partnerships have become essential for security, prosperity, and freedom.
