The president can't afford to lose the fight over pension reforms.

Only in France could a tweak to state-pension rules be considered the sort of "rupture" Nicolas Sarkozy promised in his 2007 election campaign. Still, the French president deserves praise for sticking to his reform plans in the face of the fourth nationwide protests in a month.
