Frontline Afghans Unaware of 9/11, Report Says -- CBS News

An overwhelming number of Afghan men living in the region that is a major front in the U.S.-led war on the Taliban don't know anything about the terrorist attacks that brought international soldiers to Afghanistan, according to a report from an international policy think tank released Friday.

The International Council on Security and Development said in its report that 92 percent of 1,000 Afghan men surveyed in the intense fighting areas of Helmand and Kandahar provinces were unaware of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, the Reuters news agency reported.

My Comment: A few years ago I read a news story (in a Canadian newspaper) on how Canadian soldiers were surprised that all the people they met in Kandahar were ignorant of 9/11. but when these Afghans were told of 9/11 (and shown pictures/videos) .... their perception towards the presence of Canadian soldiers in their country changed completely, and in many cases became helpful.

War is not only about guns, troop movements, and military deployments. It is also about intelligence, information, alliances, and believing that one is morally correct and right in their undertaking. Our war against Al Qaeda is a just one .... but in Afghanistan (and elsewhere) this understanding is no longer a priority for those who are fighting this war. The International Council on Security and Development's report bears this out very clearly .... and sadly .... one can make the argument that after 9 years of war many in the West also do not know why we are still staying in Afghanistan .... myself included.
