Why Taliban Talks Won't Bring Peace -- Amir Taheri, New York Post
The Afghan government and the Tali ban are preparing for face-to-face talks aimed at ending a conflict that started almost a decade ago. Yet, even before the talks begin (indeed if they do begin), it's clear that neither side is prepared to make the concessions needed to end the conflict.
Afghan sources say the talks are to take place later this month in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, in the background of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, with "significant input" from the Saudis.

My Comment: Taheri has a point. Talks with the Taliban have not been fruitful in the past .... and they probably will not be fruitful now. But advocating talks and going through the motions provides a means to quiet opponents of the war, and to give encouragement to supporters who are eager to see progress.
