The Jan. 5 assassination of Salmaan Taseer, governor of Punjab, Pakistan's richest and most populous province, was even more shocking because the alleged killer was a member of the so-called Elite Police that formed his bodyguard. Malik Mumtaz Qadri, 26, had fervent views on religion that were reportedly apparent to many who knew him — opinions, at the very least, inimical to Taseer's on Pakistan's controversial blasphemy laws. The fact that such an individual could be assigned to keep the governor safe may be an indication of the degree to which radical Islamists have compromised Pakistan's military and police apparatus.
