Syria Calls In The Tanks To Put Down The Rebellion. Scores Killed, Wounded, And Arrested

Syria Sends Tanks To Crack Down On Protesters -- L.A. Times

At least seven people are killed in the city of Dara, a flashpoint in the uprising against Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime. Military officers say troops have been ordered to fire on any protester, but activists report that some are resisting.

Reporting from Beirut—
The crackle of heavy-caliber gunfire erupted at dawn Monday as tanks rolled into the restive Syrian city of Dara, the flashpoint of the pro-democracy uprising against the regime of President Bashar Assad.

At least seven people were killed in the city amid the first tangible signs of cracks within the armed forces ordered to use military hardware against protesters. Amateur footage posted online appeared to show bodies lying in the streets as protesters came under fire from the tanks' gunners and snipers on nearby roofs.

One report by activists said that more than 25 people were killed "but no one could get close to them because of the brutal shooting."

My Comment: As I had mentioned yesterday .... if the Syrian Government does not put a damper on these demonstrations in the next few weeks, their days are numbered. I guess they also figured this out, because they are now deploying their secret police and the full might of their military to crush all dissent. My prediction, they will probably succeed but the casualty rate will be in the hundreds (if not thousands), and their legitimacy to govern will be forever questioned.
