U.S. Debt Deal Could Jeopardize Weapon Buys -- Defense News

Defense spending cuts signed into law this week as part of a debt ceiling agreement will make it even more difficult for the Pentagon to buy new weapons and modernize over the next decade, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta wrote in a letter to U.S. Defense Department employees.

"Going forward, we must ensure that the military gets the effective and affordable weapons it needs by redoubling our efforts to enforce procurement discipline," Panetta wrote in the Aug. 2 missive. "We also must continue to tackle wasteful and duplicative spending, and overhead staffing."
