U.S. Can Safely Take Deeper Nuclear Arms Cuts: Senior Defense Official -- Global Security Newswire

WASHINGTON -- A top Defense Department official on Wednesday said a fresh round of reductions in strategic nuclear weapons could be done without harming U.S. security, though the Pentagon has not yet offered President Obama a recommendation on the matter (see GSN, Feb. 15).

“I do believe that there are steps that we can take to further strengthen our deterrence posture and assurance of allies, and that I believe we can do so with lower numbers,” said James Miller, acting Defense undersecretary for policy.

These words constituted “a little bit of a hint,” Miller said, about how he anticipates advising Obama to proceed in sizing and shaping Washington’s nuclear arsenal in coming years.

My Comment: How can a defense official make such a claim before the Pentagon has even offered to the White House a recommendation on the matter. This is very dangerous thinking, and it makes me wonder if national security policy is now being driven by ideology than what are the facts on the ground. Unless .... the analysis and recommendation has already been made .... but it has not been publicized yet.
