Afghanistan Shootings: Diplomats In Kabul Are Already Discussing A Doomsday Scenario -- The Telegraph

There is never a good time for an American serviceman to go on a shooting spree in Kandahar, methodically murdering 16 Afghan men, women and children – some in their beds. But coming soon after a wave of anger engulfed Afghanistan at the burning of Korans, and as American officials negotiate the departure of troops in 2014, it is difficult to imagine a worse time.

My Comment: After listening all weekend to reports of a U.S. soldier massacring Afghan civilians in their homes, such talk by diplomats should not come as a surprise. Similarities to Iraq are also understandable .... in a certain we had overstayed .... and as a result were no longer welcomed even with the best of intentions. But when US forces left Iraq the internal sectarian strife was on the decline .... that is definitely not the case in Afghanistan. A U.S./NATO Afghan departure will accelerate Taliban efforts to overthrow the Karzai government .... and this intensification of the war will result in more bloodshed and .... most likely .... the re-installation of the Taliban in much of Afghanistan. The worse case scenario will then be the return of Al Qaeda and Al Qaeda related groups to the country.
