Watch Incredible Moment 'Pilot Accidentally Lands' Huge Air Force Jet At Tiny Island Airport -- Daily Mail

A huge Air Force cargo plane unexpectedly landed at a tiny island airport yesterday, screeching to halt within just 10 feet from the end of the runway.

The 174-foot-long jet was supposed to land across Florida’s Hillsborough Bay at MacDill Air Force Base but instead touched down at the Peter O.Knight Airport.

Although very different in size, the runways at the two locations are aligned in the same direction and it is not clear if the pilot landed at the civilian airport accidentally or whether there was a technical problem.

My Comment: I can only imagine the reaction of the aircrew when they realized that they had just landed at the wrong .... and very short .... runway. Talk about close calls.

A similar event happened down in Tucson when I was flying out of Ryan Field (mid-to-late 1990s). A 747 landed at the very small Avra Valley Airfield - which is oriented (3/21 - 3893' x 75') exactly like Tucson International Airport's (3/21 7000' x 150') - just half as long and half as wide.

Avra Valley (AKA Marana - AVQ) is a very short (26 miles) distance from Avra Valley - and lined up perfectly. For a pilot unfamiliar with the area, it would look just like you had the right spot.

Until you saw the runway and the altimeter and realized it was a LOT closer to you than you thought.

The aircraft did a lot of damage to the runway upon landing, and when he did a fast-pivot and took off again, the jet wash flipped over a number of small planes and ripped up a lot of ground indicators.

I'm guessing he lost his job...
