Their domination of the vast area -- the size of Texas -- has for months facilitated the free flow of fighters, weapons, and drugs across northern Africa, turning the territory into an ATM of sorts for radical Islamic groups and creating a safe haven not unlike Afghanistan during the Taliban's rule.
