Federal Authorities Say NSA Surveillance Programs Stopped 50 Bomb Plots Including Attacks Against The New York Stock Exchange And The City's Subway System -- Daily Maul/AP

Federal officials insisted on Tuesday that the government's sweeping surveillance programs have foiled some 50 terrorist plots worldwide, including bomb attacks against the New York Stock Exchange and the city's subway system.

While monitoring a known extremist in Yemen, intelligence agents 'were able to detect a nascent plot to bomb the New York Stock Exchange,' FBI Deputy Director Sean Joyce said in testimony to the U.S. House of Representatives Intelligence committee during a hearing on National Security Agency data gathering programs.
