Congolese troops clashed with M23 rebels, ending weeks of a lull in fighting in North Kivu province, amid stalled peace negotiations in neighboring Uganda, both sides said.
Congolese ground troops overran rebel positions at Kanyamahoro, about 16 miles north of the flashpoint city Goma, following a surprise attack early Tuesday, rebel spokesman, Amani Kabasha said. The attack came just a day after the Congolese government accused the rebels of undermining the negotiations in Kampala and imposing illegitimate restrictions on Congolese air space.
“For the past two weeks, the national army has been preparing for war” Mr. Kabasha said. “We are very concerned about this development and we call upon the United Nations to restrain the government side.”
