U.S. Is Building Up Its Military Bases In Italy For African Ops

NAVAL AIR STATION SIGONELLA, Sicily — Three P-3C Orion aircraft belonging to the "Tridents" of Patrol Squadron 26 stand ready on a rain soaked airfield here Jan. 15, 2006. Originally designed as a land-based, long-range, anti-submarine warfare patrol aircraft, the mission of the P-3C has evolved to include surveillance of the battle space at sea or over land. VP-26 is currently on a six-month deployment supporting maritime patrol operations and the Global War on Terror. (Navy photo by Petty Officer 1st Class John Collins)

My Comment: This is another example of the White House shifting away from drone strikes to conducting special operations against Al Qaeda in Africa. For more info on this U.S. base buildup, go here.
