Why Russians In Ukraine Are Afraid

Hammer-Wielding Nationalists Storm Town Council Meeting In Kiev Suburbs (VIDEOS) -- RT

Far-right radicals in Ukraine stormed a city council meeting last week, wearing masks and armed with bats and hammers.

A group of nationalist-radical group ‘Right Sector’ broke into a City Council meeting where members of the Party of Regions were sitting in the town of Vasilkov, outside the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.

Armed members of the group entered, hinting that members of the Party of Regions should “voluntarily” resign. This was after admitting that they just invaded another local meeting, where they had successfully got other elected members of the Party of Regions to resign. The members replied that they had already done so that morning.

My Comment: Ignoring the anti-Russian language laws, the purge of Russians from government/military positions, threats and intimidation, the indiscriminate confiscation of property, the appointment of extreme Ukrainian nationalists to the government .... it is scenes like the above video that is disturbing everyone. I have been hearing from my friends and family in Ukraine that this has been happening (and ongoing) for the past few weeks throughout the country, and as a result the country is now splitting apart (no surprise there). Throw in the recent Russian military occupation of Crimea .... anti-Russian sentiment in the predominant Ukrainian part of Western Ukraine is now the rule. But it is when you have senior government officials like Ukraine's ambassador to the UN who has openly expressed his sentiments (and support) of Ukrainian nationalists who supported the Nazis during the Second World War .... that is when the true nature of some of these extremists becomes known. A thug on the street is someone that you can ignore .... but a well dressed man in an official and important position who can influence policy and actions that will impact millions .... that is someone who is truly scary.

My hope is that the more moderate elements in Ukraine society will stand-up and put a stop to this nonsense .... but it has not happened yet .... and I certainly do not see it happening after this weekend's invasion of Crimea by Russian military forces. RT and a few Russian news outlets are exposing who some of these Ukrainian extremists are .... but the Western media is not interested .... to them what is happening is reminiscent of the Cold War, and it is through these optics that their coverage is based on. Besides .... Russian military forces and tanks provide a better photo-op and explanation than thugs entering a city hall and threatening the people inside with violence.
