Ukraine Gives Rebels Deadline To Disarm Or Face Military Operation -- Reuters

(Reuters) - Ukraine has given pro-Russian separatists a Monday morning deadline to disarm or face a "full-scale anti-terrorist operation" by its armed forces, raising the risk of a military confrontation with Moscow.

Angered by the death of a state security officer and the wounding of two comrades near the flashpoint eastern city of Slaviansk, acting president Oleksander Turchinov gave rebels occupying state buildings until 0600 GMT to lay down their weapons.

"The National Security and Defence Council has decided to launch a full-scale anti-terrorist operation involving the armed forces of Ukraine," Turchinov said in an address to the nation.

Well if they publicly issued that ultimatum, then it's game on. If Kiev actually attacks it probably ensures Russian intervention, if they back down it probably guarantees a collapse into country-wide chaos.

You took the words out of my mouth James.

But I have doubts on the ability of the Ukraine military to respond in the fashion that the interim government in Kiev is hoping for. Ukraine Special Forces refused to follow orders from the Ukraine PM on Friday to intervene (this news was only reported in Russia and in Ukraine), and a pro-Ukraine militia unit that entered one Russian occupied town Sunday morning (where two were killed in a gunfight) fled when the fighting started to escalate. I am also now seeing video news reports and photos of heavily armed Russian militants .... and it looks like they now have the firepower to stop any attack.

It should be noted that military service is compulsory in Ukraine .... all of these men are trained and knowledgeable in using these weapons. They also know how to defend a position, and they certainly know how to fight.
