Secretary of State Says U.S. Efforts Aren't Open-Ended; 'Reality Check Time'

WASHINGTON—Secretary of State John Kerry suggested he might pull back from his active mediation in trying to forge a Middle East peace agreement, saying Friday it is time for a "reality check" on his centerpiece foreign policy effort due to the deteriorating relations between the Israeli and Palestinian sides.

Mr. Kerry has spent nearly 14 months shuttling between Jerusalem, the West Bank and Jordan in a bid to draw together Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and to create an independent Palestinian state.

The chief U.S. diplomat had originally set April 29 as the deadline for securing a peace. But Friday he said a growing war of words between Jerusalem and Ramallah was forcing him to re-evaluate the peace process and the U.S. role in it.
