Ukrainian Defense Minister Valeriy Heletey

Ukraine Threatens to Restart Nuclear Weapons Program -- Telesur

Ukraine's Defense Minister confirms new arms being provided by NATO.

The Ukrainian Defense Minister said on Sunday that his country will restart its own nuclear program if it does not receive satisfactory military support against what he alleged to be a nuclear threat from Russia.

''I am drawing attention to Russia’s threatening of Ukraine with the use of tactical nuclear weapons, Valeriy Heletey said on Sunday.

Speaking at a press conference he added ''If we fail to defend Ukraine today, if the world does not help us, we will have to get back to the creation of such weapons, which will defend us from Russia.''

My Comment: Here is the scary part .... I know for a fact (my uncle was a managing director for a nuclear engineering company in Ukraine during the days of the Soviet Union) that Ukraine has the means, knowledge, resources, and blueprints to develop and build nuclear weapons. It may take some time .... and it will be very expensive .... but this threat can be delivered. Is it in the best interests of Ukraine to develop such weapons .... absolutely not. But such is the state of affairs in Ukraine today. On a side note .... this has become example of another important news story that is not being reported in much of the Western press.

I actually like the threat.

If they start to carry it out, then maybe we will have no more milksop Obamas, Kerrys, Hillarys and all the other drek.

Per the Washington Post women disapprove of Obama 55% to 40%. It is more than just the ACA. It is also the uncertainty on the international scene and the crime at home

The current crop of politicians cannot do much. Maybe if Ukraine goes ahead, the electorate will vote in better people.

To be fair; it might be in the best interests for Ukraine to develop these weapons.

From their standpoint, they have nothing to lose. They're already losing ground to Russian incursions into their border. They're practically bankrupt and the country continues to spiral into chaos.

What better way to get Russia off your back than to have the capability to launch a nuclear weapon as a deterrent against further Russian aggression?

The real question is however if they have the means to do it, if they have the resources to carry it out in time. I highly doubt that with the state that they are in, they would be able to provide the necessary security (to prevent sabotage) and monetary needs to manufacture such a weapon+delivery system.

I hate watching slow motion train wrecks.

All the people in government think they are smart and better.

This must be what it is like to be insane.

Russia Stirs Ethnic Tensions in Baltics

Aizino .... I have always been afraid of what may happen in the Baltics .... especially in Estonia and Latvia where the Russian population is almost 30%. In both countries .... being Russian means discrimination on almost every level .... and naturally .... many are resentful of this. On the flip side .... Latvians and Estonians did not have a good life under Soviet rule ... and they are understandably resentful of that experience.

Bottom line .... it is easy to inflame these ethnic tensions .... and the consequences could be profound. For the moment .... it is just simmering .... but events on the ground could change very quickly.

"being Russian means discrimination on almost every level "

Maybe I am not a good reader

Maybe I read the wrong media

Maybe American media does not cover this.

Human nature being what it is, I should have suspected or looked for it or made more note of it.

If I remember correctly the 1st cyber attack on Estonia was in 2008. That is a long time to not attend to discrimination, Russian government attention or whatever.

For good ethnic relations, I think the hardest thing for a country is a national language. It means a lot of people will have to learn two. I think it is a big sticking point. The next IMO would be the tolerance of ethnic languages. This gets messed up as historical examples have shown. If the people know the national language and they are willing to follow the political rules, it is stupid to discriminate.
