Ukrainian Separatist Fighter Gives A Carefree Interview Even As Shrapnel From A Rocket Attack Flies By (Video)

From The Guardian: A separatist fighter in eastern Ukraine gives a nonchalant interview as Ukrainian government forces shell a nearby building. The man calmly smokes a cigarette and discusses the ongoing conflict in Donetsk as fragments ricochet off the car next to him. It is not known where or when this unverified footage was filmed. It was uploaded to YouTube on 5 October

I put up the video because it reminds me of a war story that my dad once told me. In the first six months serving in the Soviet Army on the front .... he basically lived in his foxhole shitting in his pants when the Germans were bombing them. After that .... he always knew by the sound of the incoming shells if he was in trouble or not. He even developed the instinct of knowing where the Germans were going to bomb .... and to avoid those targets.

War photographers in WWII admitted that most of their stuff was staged (two guys on a MG in a foxhole etc) because the real thing was very undramatic. The troops were so used to it that their behavior was more like like waiting at a bus station at home.
I would be willing to bet your Dad could tell from incoming and overhead sounds, what caliber, general direction, distance, and usage, (harassment, fire for effect, etc). I also bet he could sleep right through bombardment, but would wake instantly when the sound wasn't right.

So true James. There were a few times where even with his instincts he knew he was in trouble .... and as he told me .... in those situations you could only hope that a shell would not land on you and/or near you.

He told me that his worse experience was when he saw a wave of Russian Katusha rocket fire coming his way. They had just taken a German FOB, but no one told any of the Russian artillery units that this was now under friendly hands. As he told me .... in those few seconds he knew he was going to be killed. But instinctively he and his comrades jumped into a German bunker and hoped for the best. He was the only one who crawled out alive with minor injuries but it was an experience that haunted him for the rest of his life.

As to sleeping and knowing if a situation was about to go bad .... that is another experience that also haunted him and that he shared with me. It was in the fall and the German tanks were about a kilometer or two away. It was getting cold outside so his comrades decided to bunk down in an abandoned barn. But he decided to sleep outside .... as he told me he just not feel safe. In the middle of the night he woke-up .... sensing something was wrong .... and a second or two later the barn exploded from a German tank shell. His best friend was killed as well as everyone else. He figured that someone lit a smoke, and the German spotters saw it.

As far as I know the video were maid in the Doneck Airport's area. The fighters are likely members of Motorola's unit, and he also talking in this video. Around late August I posted two video of fighting in Ukraine, the same unit were involved there as now they fighting for the airport.

Here is a longer video ( from Graham Philips, a journalist who making reports with the separatist and show hands-on footages of the fighting ), without this exact part, but the location is the same:
