Why Invading North Korea Is Crazy

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un says nuclear weapons are the "life" of his nation. (KCNA)

Harry J. Kazianis, The Week -- Why invading North Korea would be insane

My Comment: Is deposing a tyrant and the system that put him there worth one million .... two million .... maybe three million lives .... that is what probably will happen if the "nightmare scenario" unfolds. But even if the U.S. should decide that this is the best course of action to take .... I doubt that South Korea and China will ever sign-off on it.

This article oddly glossed over two things IMO.

1: The alleged masses of conventional NORK artillery capable of slaughtering Seoul without nuclear/atomic weapons, thus allowing for occupation and entrenchment.

2: How does one occupy a country that has been living '1984'?? If you think the discipline of Japanese soldiers holding out well beyond the end of ww2 was something of a marvel well just wait...

the starving and oppressed people of North Korea would welcome liberation with open arms. Nobody in the NKA will hold out like the Japanese who were motivated by religious reverence for the Emperor. Kim is hated and feared, not loved. The way to free NK would be to selectively target Kim and his murderer-elite gang in a first strike. The people and average troops would jump ship as soon as he and his crew were dead. One small problem--the West lacks the will to do something like this.

Since neither South Korea nor china would ever sign off on this, it isn't going to happen. Even if South Korea asked the US to do it, the US would refuse to do so.

Anon,

I don't think it would be that easy. If North Korea is attacked, they have been taught to hate America with a passion and will resist with every ounce of their strength. Also, there's nothing to stop them from "selectively targeting" US leaders. Also, they would have Russia and China allied with them.

The collectively strength of the Russians, Chinese, North Koreans and others who would be allied with North Korea is far greater than anything we have at our disposal. As such, barring some type of divine miracle the Us would get defeated easily and quickly.

The only way an attack on North Korea might happen is if North Korea attacks the US first. In this type of situation, North Korea and their allies would defeat the Americans and any "allies" they may have relatively quickly and easily in all likelihood.

The best option for the US would be to lessen its exposure by redeploying all military assets it currently has in South Korea outside of the country. Those assets should be redeployed to positions along America's borders, off it's coasts, and in the US mainland. This would give them a fighting chance to actually defend America and it would lessen our exposure to a North Korean attack and if it did occur our brave warriors would at least have a fighting chance to defend the United States.
