There is much here I agree with, the diplomatic angle etc, but I don't agree with the assessment of the "personal" Putin.

I would much rather have Merkl and Hollande there than Kerry.

I hate Holande. He is a high living snobby playboy, who sucks at economics.

But we are not talking economics here.

Says a lot about the current U.S. government.

Aizino,
You're seeing in this an almost complete failure of US policy, this coupled with Merkel and Hollande rushing in to salvage as much for Germany and France as possible is as good a sign as any that the EU is a hollow thing and the US is just incompetent. Now they can't even coordinate bad policy between themselves.

" Merkel and Hollande rushing in to salvage as much for Germany and France as possible"

I do not follow & I am not going to pretend otherwise.

If France & Germany try to save pieces of Ukraine instead of the whole thing might they not look like colonists? Unless they are thinking that the east is gone anyway and just try to save the rest intact.

Jay was of the opinion that the Europeans had a good deal struck until the Americans under the neocons (Nuland) blew it out of the water.

I do ask stupid questions. Ray Bradbury once told me exactly that after I wrote to him as a class assignment.

I believe an intact country will be a better trading partner for everyone concerned regardless if is a federal state or not.
