Vanity Fair: John Oliver Flew to Moscow to Interview Edward Snowden. Yes, Really.

Unlike Mad Men or Wolf Hall, this huge T.V. event of Easter Sunday came without any fanfare whatsoever. John Oliver, HBO’s comedy newscaster of record, aired a lengthy interview with none other than N.S.A. whistleblower Edward Snowden. The interview starts in the video above around the 13:45 mark. Surprised? You’re not alone.

Unlike his former Comedy Central colleagues, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, Oliver doesn’t conduct an interview in every episode. But he has, during his Last Week Tonight’s first year, already lined up a few incredible guests –– most notably Ugandan LGBTI rights advocate Pepe Julian Onziema. But Oliver will be hard-pressed to top what he called the “48 paranoid hours” he spent in Moscow in order to sit down with the U.S.’s most notorious/lauded fugitive.
