WSJ: Army Website Goes Offline as Pro-Assad Group Claims a Hack
Twitter account in name of Syrian Electronic Army allegedly claimed responsibility
WASHINGTON—The U.S. Army’s website was taken offline Monday afternoon, and a Twitter account claiming to be a group calling itself the Syrian Electronic Army alleged it had hacked the site.
The Syrian Electronic Army is a network of hackers who back embattled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Attempts Monday afternoon to load the Army’s website resulted in a “network error” message. The websites of each of the Pentagon’s other service branches, such as the Navy, were functioning properly.
Army officials confirmed that they took down the website temporarily after its homepage was compromised.
