US troops mobilise in South Korea as Kim Jong-un declares 'quasi-state of war': live (The Telegraph). What is worrisome is that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has given a 5 p.m. Saturday deadline for the broadcasts to stop, and if not he has promised military action .... Tensions rising as Kim sets a deadline (Korea JoongAng Daily). I have yet to read any reports of new U.S. deployments (specifically aircraft) to the region, or a heightened level of preparedness being ordered among U.S. bases in the West Pacific .... but if this escalation continues, do not be surprised if we hear reports that the Pentagon lights are burning brightly tonight. Another person that we should watch is President Obama. If we hear reports that he has cut his Martha's Vineyard vacation and is rushing back to Washington .... it will be because of this crisis.

Further shooting is imminent. The Fat Leader allowed himself to be photographed and associated with a specific ultimatum, with a time limit. For the time limit to expire and North Korea to do nothing would be a serious loss of face for the Fat Leader and for North Korea. The Fat Leader and his advisors knew this before they did it, and it is a way of telling South Korea (and the USA) "we really mean it this time". North Korea has deliberately painted itself into a corner.
The South Koreans will have to respond. I'll bet the White House is leaning on South Korea to cave to the ultimatum, or perhaps to limit its response to something minimal, both to control escalation and to enable this president to avoid making some very difficult decisions.
Publius. Your read on the White House putting pressure on the South Korean government to compromise is accurate. My closest South Korean contact just emailed me saying the same thing.
