CBS: North Korea threatens to send troops into the demilitarized zone

The Kim Jong Un regime is threatening to send troops into the demilitarized zone that separates North Korea and South Korea after demolishing the building that served as a diplomatic mission between the rivals. Over the past week, Pyongyang has vented fury about North Korean defectors living in the South who have been flying anti-government leaflets back over the border.

The de-facto embassy building was officially known as the Inter-Korean Liaison Office. It was only established in 2018, standing just north of the heavily-militarized border in the city of Kaesong.

On Tuesday, North Korea levelled it, and state-run media showed video of the demolition.

North Korea on Monday threatened to draft plans to take military action into areas that were disarmed under a previous agreement with the South, in response to what it described as deteriorating relations.

In a statement released by the country's propaganda media outlet, Korean Central News Agency, the Korean People's Army (KPA) said it would be "getting itself ready for providing a sure military guarantee."

North Korea has blown up its joint liaison office with the South after Kim Jong Un's sister threatened military action against Seoul.

An explosion was heard and smoke seen rising from the North Korean border city of Kaesong on Tuesday, the South's Yonhap news agency reported.

Citing unspecified sources, Yonhap said the smoke was near the joint industrial complex where the North-South liaison office is located.

The explosion came three days after Kim Yo Jung, the sister of the North Korean leader, repeated an earlier threat by saying Seoul will soon witness the collapse of the 'useless' inter-Korean liaison office.

South Korea Holds Emergency Meeting After North Korea Threatens Military Action

NBC: Emergency meeting held in South Korea after Kim Jong Un's sister threatens military action

South Korean military "is maintaining resolute military readiness to respond to all situation,” the country's defense ministry said.

South Korea convened an emergency security meeting on Sunday after the sister of North Korea’s leader threatened military action against South Korea in the latest escalation of tensions between the two neighbors.

Kim Yo Jong, a trusted aide to her brother, Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un, said she would leave the right to take the next step of retaliation against South Korea to North Korea’s military in a statement carried by state news agency KCNA on Saturday.

Kim, who has gained new prominence in North Korea's power structure, did not specify what the next action could be, or when exactly it will be taken, but she added: “I feel it is high time to surely break with the South Korean authorities. We will soon take the next action.”

DW: Kim Jong Un's sister threatens military action against South Korea

North Korea's army will "surely" take action against South Korea amid failing ties, said Kim Yo Jong, the sister of the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. She has been taking on an increasingly prominent role in Pyongyang.

Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, on Saturday slammed South Korea as "the enemy" and said Seoul would soon witness the collapse of a "useless" liaison office in the border town of Kaesong.

"By exercising my power authorized by the supreme leader, our party and the state, I gave an instruction to the arms of the department in charge of the affairs with enemy to decisively carry out the next action,'' she said in a statement, without providing details,

"Our army, too, will determine something for cooling down our people's resentment and surely carry out it, I believe," she added.

The North Korean politician also said she felt it was "high time to break with the South Korean authorities" in a likely reference to previous threats of cutting all ties with the Seoul government.

Yonhap News Agency: Multiple gunshots fired from N. Korea hit S. Korean DMZ guard post: JCS

Multiple bullets from North Korea hit a South Korean guard post inside the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), prompting the South to broadcast a warning and fire back, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.

The gunshots hit the guard unit in the central border town of Cheorwon at around 7:41 a.m.. No casualties or damage to South Korean facilities were reported, according to the JCS.

Following the incident, the military issued broadcast warnings, and fired back twice, it added.

BBC: North Korea 'hackers steal US-South Korea war plans'

Hackers from North Korea are reported to have stolen a large cache of military documents from South Korea, including a plan to assassinate North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un.

Rhee Cheol-hee, a South Korean lawmaker, said the information was from his country's defence ministry.

The compromised documents include wartime contingency plans drawn up by the US and South Korea.

They also include reports to the allies' senior commanders.

The South Korean defence ministry has so far refused to comment about the allegation.

South Korea and the U.S. likely would overwhelm Pyongyang’s army, but at a devastating cost

SEOUL—South Korea’s capital sits so close to North Korea—35 miles away—that Kim Jong Un wouldn’t need ballistic or cruise missiles to damage the city: Shelling it with the artillery that Pyongyang has amassed near the border would suffice.

If North Korea were to attack Seoul, either in a pre-emptive strike or in response to a U.S. assault on its soil, the 25 million citizens in the metropolitan area would be urged to seek shelter, primarily deep underground in the city’s subway network.

Meanwhile, the South Korean military would attempt to counter artillery fire with attacks on North Korean positions—the North has 8,600 cannons and 5,500 multiple rocket launchers, according to South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense.

The above scenario, described by military and security experts who have worked with the U.S. and South Korean forces, would entail fierce fighting and large numbers of casualties.

North Korean state media railed against its southern neighbor Thursday for staging a joint missile drill with the US following Pyongyang’s jarring intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch, saying it would be a “piece of cake” to destroy South Korea.

The report, published by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), decried Seoul as "puppet military gangsters," claiming "It will be as easy as a piece of cake for the [North] to wipe out the puppet forces… as we are now able to destroy even the US mainland across the ocean."

Pyongyang claims the Hwasong-14 ICBM, is capable of striking the "heart of the United States" with "large heavy nuclear warheads." The ominous benchmark was passed despite US President Donald Trump’s Twitter proclamation before entering office that the development of such a missile "won't happen!"

Preparing for war can sometimes help prevent one, and those preparations are probably helpful if one does start. Perhaps it’s time to show North Korea what its forces would be in for, and to show our allies in the South that we are with them, seriously.

The best course may be through field exercises conducted jointly by US and South Korean conventional forces, demonstrating operational capabilities to be used in the face of nuclear strikes.

Often a second Korean War is imagined to end with US nuclear weapons destroying the North. True, this year United States has twice flown bombers over South Korea, perhaps to make sure that Kim remembers we have them. But it seems improbable that the US would use nuclear weapons in a war against the North, even if Kim Jong Un started the war by using atomic bombs.

Reuters: North Korea lays new landmines near border truce village: report

North Korea has laid landmines in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between the two Koreas, the South's Yonhap news agency reported on Tuesday, as tension rose on the divided peninsula after the start of annual U.S.-South Korean military exercises.

North Korea, which conducted its fourth nuclear test in January and a string of rocket tests since then, regards the joint exercises as akin to war and has threatened to launch a military strike in retaliation.

North Korea had laid the mines near the DMZ "truce village" of Panmunjom, which is controlled by both of the Koreas and the U.S. military.

"North Korean's military was seen laying several landmines last week on the North's side of the Bridge of No Return," Yonhap quoted an unidentified South Korean government source as saying.

SEOUL, South Korea — A colonel belonging to North Korea’s spy agency recently defected to South Korea, the South announced on Monday. He is one of the highest-ranking North Korean military officers known to have defected to South Korea in recent decades.

The Defense and Unification Ministries of South Korea would only confirm that a colonel from the North’s General Bureau of Reconnaissance had recently defected, declining to provide further details.

The South Korean news agency Yonhap, which earlier reported the officer’s defection, said he arrived in South Korea last year. A few South Korean news outlets also reported on Monday that a North Korean diplomat stationed in an African country defected to the South last May. The government confirmed that defection as well.

IBTimes: South Korea Forms ‘Spartan 3000’ Unit To Attack North Korea In Case Of Contingency

The South Korean Marine Corps has formed a new mobile unit assigned to attack North Korea in case of contingency, a Seoul military official told Yonhap Sunday. The regiment, “Spartan 3000,” consists of 3,000 troops and was launched in the southeastern coastal city of Pohang, the report said.

The troops will be on standby to be deployed to all the parts of the Korean peninsula within a day and will be trained to destroy important North Korean military facilities. During other times the unit will be deployed to handle emergency situations and disasters, Yonhap reported.

North Korea conducted an artillery drill near the sea border with South Korea, startling South Koreans and making them prepare for a possible evacuation, officials said Saturday.

Later, North Korean’s official Korean Central News Agency hurled insults at South Korean President Park Geun-hye, calling her a “tailless, old, insane bitch” as it denounced her hardline response to the North’s recent long-range rocket launch and nuclear test.

The defence ministry in Seoul said the North Korean vessel crossed the disputed Yellow Sea border just before 7am (2300 GMT Sunday). It “quickly retreated” at 7.15am after five warning shots were fired by a naval gun, a ministry official said.

South Korea Resumes Its Propaganda Broadcasts Against North Korea

CNN: South Korea reactivates propaganda speakers as tensions with North rise

Pyongyang, North Korea (CNN)Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have once again ratcheted up as South Korea responds to its northern neighbor's latest antagonism.

The South reactivated its propaganda speakers near its heavily fortified border with North Korea on Friday following Pyongyang's announcement about its purported H-bomb test earlier in the week.

Seoul announced that, as of midday Friday local time (10 p.m. Thursday evening ET), it has resumed broadcasting propaganda using loudspeakers over the demilitarized zone, the heavily guarded buffer between the two Koreas.
