Yesterday's Taliban Attacks Were The Deadliest 24 Hours That The Afghan Capital Has Seen In Years

Wall Street Journal: Afghan Capital Suffers Deadliest Day of Attacks in Years

Three bombings in Kabul kill dozens, including one U.S. service member

KABUL—More than 50 people were killed in three separate bombings in Kabul, including a late-night attack on a U.S. forces base that left one service member dead, making it the single bloodiest day for the Afghan capital in recent years, local and foreign officials said Saturday.

A car bomb exploded late Friday outside the headquarters of the U.S. military’s elite special forces in Kabul, triggering a firefight that continued for hours. That followed separate attacks on an Afghan police academy and an Afghan army compound earlier in the day. The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack on the U.S. base and the police academy.

One service member and eight civilians working for the coalition died in the attack on the U.S. base, said U.S. Army Col. Brian Tribus, a spokesman for U.S. and coalition forces in Afghanistan. A senior Afghan security official said the eight civilians were Afghan.
