Taliban Move To Seize Firearms Owned By Civilians

Summit News: Taliban Immediately Moves to Confiscate Firearms From Civilians

Militant group repeats historical trend of establishing monopoly on force.

In what has now become a familiar historical trend, one of the Taliban’s first acts after the militant group took Afghanistan was to confiscate firearms owned by civilians.

Reuters reports that Taliban fighters in Kabul quickly set about collecting weapons from civilians because “people no longer need them for personal protection.”

“We understand people kept weapons for personal safety. They can now feel safe. We are not here to harm innocent civilians,” said a Taliban official.

“Give us your guns. We will protect you.” – Every government that is about to commit mass murder ever,” remarked Spike Cohen.

The Men Are Fleeing Afghanistan. Where Are All The Women?

Suzette Hackney, USA Today: Our eyes don't deceive us: The men are fleeing Afghanistan. Where are all the women?

Maybe these men are doing the only thing they can to eventually protect their families by escaping. But it just doesn't sit right with me.

The horrific images coming out of Kabul's airport – thousands of Afghan men clinging to planes, some falling to their death – tell the story of the desperation among those living in Afghanistan just hours after a Taliban government takeover.

Afghan men.

It's men, and boys, climbing up jetways, trying to board planes. It's men, running alongside a rolling U.S. military plane as it tries to take off.

Look at the overwrought crowds on the tarmac at Hamid Karzai International Airport, seeking a way out of the collapsing country.

Our eyes don't deceive us – it was nearly all men.

Inside a packed military cargo plane? Again, the faces of men and boys, a disproportionate amount.

The Coming Economic, Social, And Humanitarian Crisis In Afghanistan Will Be The Worst That The World Has Seen In Decades

VOA: Hunger Grips Millions as Afghanistan Falls to Taliban Insurgents

GENEVA - The World Food Program is warning of a dramatic rise in the number of hungry people in Afghanistan as fighting and displacement in the war-torn country intensify.

A United Nations assessment of the food security and nutrition situation in Afghanistan finds one in three Afghans face acute food insecurity. That means an estimated 14 million people in the war-torn country are barely able to meet their daily minimum food needs.

Because of the dire situation, the World Food Program says malnutrition levels are soaring, and some 2 million children need nutrition treatment to survive.

WFP spokesman Tomson Phiri says the Afghan people are facing both an artificial and natural disaster, rendering them unable to feed their families.

He says a poor harvest is projected as the country has been hit by a second drought in four years.

WNU Editor: Here is a good overview of the Afghan economy .... What next for Afghanistan's economy? (Andrew Walker, BBC World Service).

I did the math.

22% of the Afghan economy is dependent on foreign aid. It is safe to say that most of that aid has now evaporated.

Foreign investment will no longer happen. I expect sanctions will be imposed within a month or two (when all foreign nationals are out of the country). The Chinese are talking about investing in Afghanistan. I have to see it to believe it.

Before the collapse there were 116,000 Afghan police/border guards/and other law enforcement officers (link here). It is safe to say that they are now out of a job.

300,000 Afghan soldiers. They are now unemployed, with many of them now in hiding.

Before the collapse there were about 350,000 Afghan government employees in administration. The cleaning staff will probably be permitted to return, but despite Taliban assurances that everyone is safe, my gut tells me that most government employees will not return to work.

I am reading reports that medical personnel throughout the country are being forced to go back to work. Ditto for contractors who maintain the country's infrastructure. Forcing and threatening people to work is not the best way to maintain your economy.

The Taliban were asked today if the country's financial and banking system will be safe under their rule. The fact that such a question was even asked is a red flag to everyone that your money is no longer safe in Afghanistan right now.

Agricultural production, that involves approximately 60% of the country's workforce, is in a shambles because of the war, a drought, and Covid. There is now a very real possibility of famine in some parts of the country during the winter months.

22% of the workforce is made-up of women. Their future is definitely in doubt.

Bottom line.

I see an economic contraction that will not only cripple the country for years to come, but it will generate a social and humanitarian crisis that will shock many.

Afghanistan was a troubled country even in the best of times, but I predict they will be classified as a failed state within a year.

As I said. I did the math.

West Has Two Weeks To Complete Afghanistan Evacuation

The Guardian: West has two weeks to complete Afghanistan evacuation, say sources

UK defence secretary has conceded Britain will not be able to extract all eligible Afghan allies from country

The UK defence secretary has admitted “some people will not get back” as Britain tries to evacuate Afghan allies from Kabul, along with its own citizens, and as government sources suggested the west had just two weeks to facilitate departures.

Ben Wallace appeared to hold back tears as he spoke about the effort to repatriate Britons and process visas for Afghan interpreters and other staff following the Taliban takeover.

The US has said it will withdraw all forces by the end of the month, which one Whitehall source said would be the deadline in practice for the UK to manage departures from the country.

The UK ambassador to Afghanistan, Sir Laurie Bristow, was due to be airlifted out of the country over the weekend, but will stay in Kabul airport personally signing visa applications.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani Has Fled The Country. Taliban Demand Unconditional Surrender

Daily Mail: Taliban demand control of Kabul: War chiefs call for SURRENDER as invading militants take Bagram air base and free 5,000 loyal prisoners - but Afghan Defence Minister insists 'security of capital is ensured'

* Jalalabad fell under Taliban control without a fight early Sunday morning when the governor surrendered

Taliban fighters have entered Kabul and are seeking a 'peaceful transfer of power' with gunfire heard near the presidential palace as the extremists seized huge swathes of the country in the wake of the US military departure.

The militants were seen in the districts of Kalakan, Qarabagh and Paghman hours after taking control of Jalalabad, the most recent major Afghan city to fall to the insurgents as they make huge gains across Afghanistan.

The US evacuated diplomats from its embassy by helicopter as a Taliban spokesman said they were looking for a 'peaceful surrender' of the capital after meeting little resistance, while the British ambassador moved to a safe place to prepare for an evacuation.

Taliban fighters have captured Mazar-i-Sharif, the last major city in northern Afghanistan which was still under government control.

The fall of the traditional anti-Taliban bastion marked a major gain for the militants, who have been advancing at speed as US-led forces withdraw.

President Ashraf Ghani travelled to the city just days ago to rally troops.

The Taliban are now in control of much of the country and are edging closer to the capital Kabul.

More than a quarter of a million people have been displaced by the violence, and many have fled to Kabul in the hope of finding safety.

The Taliban Now Have An Air Force

Daily Mail: Taliban Air: Fighters seize $6million US Blackhawk helicopters alongside tons of American equipment - while taking to the skies in captured Russian choppers as advance approaches outskirts of Kabul

* Videos on social media show insurgents flying the Russian-made aircraft around the Afghan city of Kandahar

* More clips also show how the Taliban have additionally seized American-made Black Hawk helicopters

* Fighters are unlikely to possess the knowledge or the expertise to fly or maintain the state-of-the-art aircraft

* But it will cause embarrassment after the White House spent billions of dollars supplying the Afghan military

Taliban fighters today seized $6million US Blackhawk helicopters alongside tons of American equipment as they took to the skies in captured Russian choppers amid their advance through Afghanistan.

A series of videos being shared on social media show insurgents flying the Kremlin-made mi-17 aircraft around the city of Kandahar, with concerns continuing to grow over the militants' ongoing grab for power.

Even more seismic, however, is the evidence that the Taliban have also seized American-made Blackhawk helicopters, made famous in the 2001 Ridley Scott blockbuster.

In a Pre-Recorded Message Afghan President Ghani Addresses The Nation As The Taliban Approach Kabul

France 24: Afghan president addresses nation as Taliban close in on Kabul

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani delivered a televised address on Saturday in a bid to rally troops defending Kabul as the Taliban tightened their territorial stranglehold around the capital and US Marines returned to oversee emergency evacuations.

Ghani said he was ordering the Afghan military to remobilise as they seek to defend the capital from the Taliban after the insurgents’ astonishing blitz through Afghanistan over the past week.

“In the current situation, the remobilisation of our security and defence forces is our top priority, and serious steps are being taken in this regard,” he said.

The focus must also be on “preventing further instability, violence and displacement of people”, Ghani added.

With the country's second- and third-largest cities Kandahar and Herat having fallen into Taliban hands, Kabul has become the besieged last stand for government forces who have offered little or no resistance elsewhere.

Taliban Are Now Saying That Kabul Will Fall In 7 Days

ABC News: Taliban say will completely take over Afghanistan in 7 days, set eyes on Kabul as key cities fall

The Taliban's statement came close on the heels of the group's fighters making rapid gains in conflict zones

Taliban fighters will complete the takeover of Afghanistan, including the capital city of Kabul, in less than seven days, the insurgent group told CNN-News18 on Friday, buoyed by their spectacular success in gaining control of city after city in a weekslong military blitzkrieg.

The Taliban do not want to resort to violence and will not attack any foreign mission or non-governmental organisation (NGO), the group said, in an apparent bid to gain some sort of international legitimacy in the face of criticism of its brutal campaign to usurp power in the trouble-torn country.

Taliban Now 30 Miles From Kabul

Zero Hedge: Taliban Now 30 Miles From Kabul As Terrifying "March On Capital" Begins

The big international headlining story this week has been the Taliban's lighting fast gobbling up of Afghan territory amid the Biden ordered complete US troop withdrawal by the symbolic date of September 11.

As we observed previously, it's looking to get very awkward fast given the Taliban at this rate will be in control of the entire country by that date, making any 'mission accomplished' type speech given by Biden a total humiliation before the teleprompter so much as gets rolling.

As of yesterday the Taliban established itself a mere 90 miles south of Kabul, after capturing a major highway between the Afghan capital of Kandahar (the latter is now in complete Taliban control), given its taking of the provincial capital Ghazni along the highway.

The Taliban now has at least 18 provincial capitals under its belt, which makes up well over two-thirds of the geographic country.

On Friday there are new reports the Taliban are now a mere 30 miles from Kabul, putting the Islamists in direct striking distance as preparations for a major offensive begin, and as the US embassy has been ordered evacuated.
