PW Singer and August Cole, The Telegraph: Here's how World War Three could start tomorrow
It would only take a small spark to start a conflict between Nato and China or Russia - unleashing previously unseen forms of warfare
There is an old adage that militaries set themselves up by failure by preparing to fight the last war. When it comes to 21st Century warfare, the problem however may not be with looking back, but that we aren’t looking back far enough.
For the last two decades, leaders in London and Washington have become focused on operations in places like Sierra Leona, Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and now Syria, where the worry was, and is, weak and imploding states.
But bigger trends are at play globally. We are seeing the return of great power politics – and with it, the risk of powerful states going to war. Conflict with the likes of Russia or China was something that seemed buried with the end of the Cold War. Yet today’s simmering tensions mean there is a risk of such an outcome becoming all too real.
WNU Editor: A sobering essay. And what worries me is that all World War Three scenarios end up with nuclear annihilation.

WNU Editor,
We have probably never been safer.
The Neocon's and R2P Neoliberals are not " true belivers", they have never enlisted, never fought, the are just con men and women working the long con.
When push comes to shove, they cave.
It's really should be called WW4
It would be WW 8 or 9.
The French & Indian Wars and the American Revolution were part of Larger World Wars.
Pick a definition and stick with it. Statistically it is scary. So what separates us from inanimate objects like electrons and protons? We have Bose–Einstein statistics for quantum particles. We have statisticians model the outbreak of war with the Poisson distribution. It makes you want to go to church or to give up on it.
Yeah, re-elect G.W.Bush Junior!
Again, it's "neocons." As in "neoconservatives." There is no apostrophe.
The Catholic Church has been accused of delaying the advance of medicine and science during the middle ages by 400 years. Imagine if the church had not delayed the advance of science and we were 300 to 400 years ahead. I think mankind would have been wiped up at least a hundred years ago.
Colin Powell said if you break it, you own it.
We went into Iraq. We stayed to rebuild.
Colin Powell went on to support Barack Obama. Did he not remember his own words and pass them on to Obama?
Did Obama not listen?
Iraq has a chance until Obama handed it to Iran. Where is Libya now? You remember, Obama's R2P effort.
During the 2nd Bush term, liberals were real sincere is telling us that Iraq was the bad war and Afghanistan was the good war, the righteous war. That is until Iraq was 'deemed' over. Remember, the enemy gets a vote. After Iraq, Afghanistan became a bad war too. Obama wanted to leave without meeting objectives.
Who did a bectter job in Afghanistan, Bush or Obama?
You don't want to enter the field with a leader, who will just cut and run.
Do you really want to enter a war zone, when a leader like Senate Majority leader Harry Reid is screeching "The war is lost"? Mind you Harry is the strong man of character and physical strength that got hospitalized by a rubber band type exercise device.
He is wise too. He anchored his rubber band to a shower door? Really? Genius of that sort should be nowhere near the chambers of power.
During Bush's presidency Russia did things to oppose and frustrate the US covertly. During Obama's presidency Russia does things overtly.
You can screech about neocons all you want, if it makes you sleep better at night.
