Defense News: Chinese Newspaper: Spy Satellites Will Target US Carriers

China’s military is getting its ducks in a row for what many experts see as a realistic competence at destroying US aircraft carriers during a confrontation scenario over Taiwan.

In a recent issue of the Chinese-language state-run China Youth Daily newspaper, a report claims that the Gaofen-4 geostationary earth observation satellite will be launched by the end of this year with the express purpose of hunting US aircraft carriers. The satellite is equipped with a visible light imager at 50 meters and infrared staring optical imager at 400 meters.

During the 1996 Taiwan Strait missile crisis, the Chinese military was flustered by the presence of two US aircraft carriers sent to protect Taiwan during missile exercises designed to intimidate the island.

WNU Editor: I think it is only a question of time before the Chinese are able to track all U.S. ships just as well as the U.S. is able to track them.

Carriers are great big targets, as the airplane was to the Battleship, HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse sunk by Japanese air attack 10 Dec 41, which signifies the end of the Battleship dominance, even though Gen Billy Mitchell foretold this almost 20 years earlier, the anti ship missile will be to the carrier. The future of the navy will be smaller ships and plenty of subs, the only problem is the very few in leadership have figured it out. Like the British and French in 1940 the leadership today are stuck in the past, the first days and weeks after the outbreak, are going to be a mess and a shock. We can see the shock the Russians have caused with their Cruise missiles, fired only days ago.
