Michael Holtz, CSM: For many Canadians, election is about one thing: more Stephen Harper?

Mr. Harper has been prime minister since 2006, and has shifted overall Canadian politics to the right. Polls indicate that a majority of Canadians want to see a change.

TORONTO — Bengt Lindvall grows nostalgic when he reminisces about the Canada he discovered when he moved here from Sweden in 1966 as a 26-year-old mechanical engineer. He arrived with his wife, who was five months pregnant at the time, after accepting a job he couldn’t refuse at a steam turbine factory in a nearby suburb.

“It was a gutsy move,” he says proudly.

The family landed in a Canada that shared many similarities with Sweden. The long-ruling Liberal Party had endorsed a progressive agenda that aligned the country more closely with Europe than the United States. Its policies – universal health care, gun control, and international peacekeeping – helped cultivate Canada’s image as an open, pluralistic society with an idealistic view of the world.

The winner of tonight's election will have an onerous task. With Canadians massively in debt and the vast majority living paycheck to paycheck, very few positive results will come forth. The damage Harper has inflicted on Canada cannot and will not be changed by his rivals. No body will have the panacea, let alone a kid who doesn't have any track record or an aged old socialist. Canada is in recession and in trouble and we need to let this false economy collapse and start anew.

It's what happens between the collapse and starting anew that has this Canadian concerned.

I was hopping for a minority Govt, when we have majority Govt's they always seem to go to excess. Not very confident in Trudeau Jr he's an actor by profession, not the superbly educated man his father was, this is worrisome. We need to go to a proportional system the first past the post allows a party to take power with less than 50% of the votes, the Liberals got around 40% doesn't make for good governing.
