France - Iran Diplomatic State Dinner Cancelled Because Of Wine And Halal Meat

RT: Historic Hollande-Rouhani dinner scrapped due to insistence on wine & non-halal meat

Iran’s President Rouhani will visit France next week, but the historic visit will not feature a dinner with President Hollande. Why? Because the French wouldn’t agree to serve halal meat and wouldn't budge on serving alcohol.

The formal lunch with the French leader was meant to take place at the Elysee Palace, but reports indicate it is not to be, according to France’s RTL.

According to the news source, Rouhani refused on religious grounds. “A meal was contemplated, but fell apart,” a source familiar with the issue said.

WNU Editor: I support the French on this one. It's their house .... if you don't like their rules, do not show up.

WNU Editor,

Different (Scottish) take. The dinner is about the Guest, not the Host.

In our house, when we invite Vegan friends for dinner, we serve a vegan meal, Jewish friends, kosher, Muslim friends, Halal, Jain friends, as hard as it is, free gathered.

We don't invite Muslim and Jewish friends to the table and serve Baby Back Ribs and Shellfish.

Jay. The problem is not accommodating the guest .... we do the same in my home all the time .... the problem is the guest (Iran) is telling France (correction .... dictating to them) what they must eat and drink. That is what is irking the French. I know if the roles were reversed and I go to Iran as a diplomat wanting bacon and booze .... oh oh .... they are going to tell me to take a hike .... "guest or no guest".

WNU Editor,

Again, a different (Scottish) take.

As a host, we "share" a meal with our guests, and that includes their religious/medical dietary restrictions.

We don't serve the one person at the table with nut allergies a green salad, boiled chicken and vanellia icecream, while everyone else eats Harbour Salad, Chicken Satay and Pestachio icecream.
