WNU Editor: I suspect that when this map is done again in 2016 .... there will be even more territory under the control and/or influence of these groups.

As I said some while back good-bye Afghanistan. All that's left is the removing of the last vestigal military forces and waging the propaganda withdrawal. There has been much talk of Taliban vs ISIS lately, it's premature. ISIS is establishing themselves, but they are usually more than happy for the Taliban to do the heavy fighting while they organize for future takeover.
If I was ISIS high command I would see the world thusly:
1)The sunni vs shia conflict is central to Orthodoxy, but not in the Geo-Political sense, so containment of the Shias and Iran to their present territories will suffice.
2)Extension into the old SSR Central Asian Republics to link up and support native Isamacists there and in China.
3) Extension and consolidation of geographic conquest to the west from Libya. Giving them control of Europe's main energy source and control of the Straits of Gibraltar, which would give direct access to Europe itself.
4) Saving as much as possible their relationship with Turkey.
5) Ejection of Russia from the Syrio-Med area.
6) Isolation and eventual taking of Egypt
7) Isolation of Irael
8) The taking of and retention of Mecca and Medina
9) Continuance of terrorism in Europe, Russia, China, and the USA to spread confusion, doubt, and fear.
Some would say this is a tall order, but ISIS has gone a long way along this road. They have been helped immensely by the West's own deplorable political and ethical conditions. Until they experience large scale face to face land defeat they will continue to be successful and will expand. No bombing campaign can stop this.
