Are U.S. Soldiers Deployed In The Sinai At Risk From Islamic State Attacks?

NPR: A Place Where U.S. Troops Are Very Close To ISIS

Some 700 American troops on a long-running deployment could be in danger of an attack by extremists affiliated with the Islamic State, the Pentagon worries, but it may not be able to get them out anytime soon.

U.S. military commanders fear the soldiers deployed in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, and charged with keeping the peace between Egypt and Israel, are becoming an irresistible target for Islamist fighters concentrating nearby.

The Wilayat Sinai group has pledged allegiance to ISIS, attacked Egyptian troops and planted roadside bombs. They have called the peacekeepers a "crusader force." The group dramatically raised its profile last November when it claimed responsibility for downing a Russian civilian plane filled with tourists over the Sinai, killing all 224 on board.

Not sure of why they are even there, for the most part the Israeli's and Eygptians don't hate each other that much anymore. My two cents, take them and move them somewhere else, they are useless there, IMO.

Reagan committed US Forces to Task Force Sinia back in 1982 as part of the UN Monitoring Comission put in place to monitor the Egypt- Israel Peace Treaty.

"Sufism was previously dominant in the region before jihadi ideas began to take hold.[27] The Sinai peninsula has long been known for its lawlessness, having historically served as a smuggling route for weapons and supplies. Security provisions in the Egypt–Israel Peace Treaty of 1979 have institutionalized a diminished security presence in the area, enabling militants to operate with a freer hand. Moreover, the limited government-directed investment and development in Sinai has discriminated against the local Bedouin population, a population that values tribal allegiance over all else. The combination of Sinai's harsh terrain and lack of resources have kept the area poor and hence ripe for militancy.[28]"

So, you are thanking the wrong President, and placing the "blame" in the wrong quadrant.

No, I am thanking the right person that dumbazz Obama.

I suppose Jay thinks war between Israel and Egypt was preferable to the peace Jimmy Carter got.

I the poverty in the Sinai a result of a peace treaty or Kleptocratic government?

I guess the moral of the story is to not negotiate in peace treaties anymore.

Cuz you know all government have a degree of cronyism and most very much so.

Maybe economic development would have been better, if nice, loving jihadis had not assassinated Sadat. He was one of the original signers.

I suppose that Sadat was as bad as Carter, Reagan, & Begin for signing that treaty.

It is similar to people rioting, looting and burning buildings and the complaining later that there is no investment in their community.

... Or a 1st lady bemoans no supermarkets or a food desert.

For 1200 years, the Beduin of the Sinai were Becktshi Sufi, known for their hospitality, music, dance, Dervishes and camel racing.

A 40 year Saudi program of Mosques, Madrassada's and militant Iman's, ( that you support and approve of), has converted most of the Sinai Beduin to Nashquabadi Sufism, where in music, dance, camel racing are all haram, and Dervishes are burned as witches.

Your support for Islamic terrorism and the House of Saud, never fails to astound me.
