Militants Storm Baghdad Mall Taking Hostages

Wall Street Journal: At Least 29 People Killed in Two Attacks in Iraq

Nine people killed in siege at Baghdad mall; 20 people killed by bombings in cafe in Muqdadiya

BAGHDAD—At least 29 people have been killed in two attacks in Iraq on Monday evening, one took place at a shopping mall in eastern Baghdad and the other outside a cafe in a city northeast of the capital.

The assault on the shopping mall was carried out by two attackers, who killed at least nine people and wounded 13 others, Iraqi officials said.

The attackers detonated a parked car bomb outside the Al-Jawhara mall in the New Baghdad area early in the evening, then lobbed hand grenades at a crowd of pedestrians on the sidewalk and sprayed them with bullets, the officials said.

The siege on the mall was a rare complex attack in the Iraqi capital, which routinely sees car bombs and individual murders. It lasted less than an hour, police said.
