Two bomb explode in Tayran Square, the most serious attack in the capital since PM declared victory over Isis

Two suicide bombers have blown themselves up at a busy market in central Baghdad in back-to-back explosions that killed at least 38 people, Iraqi officials say.

The bombings were the most serious attacks in the capital since the prime minister, Haidar al-Abadi, declared victory over Islamic State a little over a month ago, capping a three-year campaign to reclaim territory from the terror group in Iraq.

Islamic State Launches Suicide Attacks In Southern Iraq

Reuters: Suicide attacks on restaurants, checkpoint, kill 60 in southern Iraq

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Three suicide attacks claimed by Islamic State killed at least 60 people in southern Iraq on Thursday, a health official and police sources said, suggesting a shift in the ultra-hardline group’s tactics since it lost control of its stronghold in Mosul.

Iraqi and Kurdish security officials say the Sunni militants are likely to wage a guerrilla war in Iraq after their self-proclaimed caliphate in Mosul collapsed.

Islamic State is also under siege in the Syrian city of Raqqa, its operational base for attacks in the Middle East and the West.

New Bomb Attack In Iraq Results With The Iraqi PM Dismissing His Top Baghdad Security Officials

Reuters: Iraqi PM dismisses top Baghdad security officials after bombing

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi on Friday dismissed three officials in charge of Baghdad's security after last weekend's bombing that killed nearly 300 people and caused outrage at the inadequacy of emergency services and the security apparatus.

A statement posted on his Facebook page said he had fired the commander of military operations, security services and intelligence in the capital.

The bombing, claimed by the ultra-hardline Sunni militant group Islamic State, was the deadliest bombing in Iraq since U.S.-led forces toppled Saddam Hussein 13 years ago.

Interior Minister Mohammed Ghabban resigned on Tuesday blaming the attack on a lack of communication between multiple forces in charge of the capital's security.

A map of every car bomb explosions in Baghdad since 2003.

Alexander C. Kaufman, Huffington Post: A Staggering Reminder That Terror Is An Epidemic In Baghdad

So much for Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Twin car bombings left nearly 120 people dead and 200 wounded in Baghdad on Sunday in a busy shopping district of the Iraqi capital.

The self-described Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, claimed responsibility for the attacks, which came as the terror group was driven from the city of Fallujah by U.S.- and Iran-backed forces.

The death toll is significantly higher this time than in other recent terror attacks the group has claimed. Gunmen killed 20 hostages at a cafĂ© in the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka on Friday night. Tuesday’s terror attack at Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport killed 41 and left 239 injured. The bombings in Brussels in March ended 35 lives and wounded more than 300 people.

Militants Storm Baghdad Mall Taking Hostages

Wall Street Journal: At Least 29 People Killed in Two Attacks in Iraq

Nine people killed in siege at Baghdad mall; 20 people killed by bombings in cafe in Muqdadiya

BAGHDAD—At least 29 people have been killed in two attacks in Iraq on Monday evening, one took place at a shopping mall in eastern Baghdad and the other outside a cafe in a city northeast of the capital.

The assault on the shopping mall was carried out by two attackers, who killed at least nine people and wounded 13 others, Iraqi officials said.

The attackers detonated a parked car bomb outside the Al-Jawhara mall in the New Baghdad area early in the evening, then lobbed hand grenades at a crowd of pedestrians on the sidewalk and sprayed them with bullets, the officials said.

The siege on the mall was a rare complex attack in the Iraqi capital, which routinely sees car bombs and individual murders. It lasted less than an hour, police said.

Baghdad Rocked By Multiple Bomb Blasts

Bomb Attacks Kill At Least 24 In Iraq Capital -- Reuters

(Reuters) - At least 24 people were killed in bomb explosions in the Iraqi capital late on Monday, including blasts near two Shi'ite Muslim mosques and at a busy bus station, police and medics said.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for any of the attacks, but Shi'ites are often targeted by Sunni Islamist insurgents who have been regaining ground in Iraq over the past year and overran several towns in recent weeks.

In Monday's deadliest attack, a minibus packed with explosives blew up at a bus station in the mainly Shi'ite district of Ur in northern Baghdad, killing at least 11 people, police and medical sources said.

Iraqi Suicide Bomb Instructor Accidentally Kills Himself And 21 Of His Pupils

Suicide Bomb Instructor Accidentally Kills Iraqi Pupils -- New York Times

BAGHDAD — A group of Sunni militants attending a suicide bombing training class at a camp north of Baghdad were killed on Monday when their commander unwittingly conducted a demonstration with a belt that was packed with explosives, army and police officials said.

The militants belonged to a group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, which is fighting the Shiite-dominated army of the Iraqi government, mostly in Anbar Province. But they are also linked to bomb attacks elsewhere and other fighting that has thrown Iraq deeper into sectarian violence.

Twenty-two ISIS members were killed, and 15 were wounded, in the explosion at the camp, which is in a farming area in the northeastern province of Samara, according to the police and army officials. Stores of other explosive devices and heavy weapons were also kept there, the officials said.

Eight militants were arrested when they tried to escape, the officials said.

Multiple Baghdad Car Bombs Kill At Least 13 -- Reuters

(Reuters) - Seven car bombs exploded across Baghdad on Thursday, killing at least 13 people in apparently coordinated attacks that targeted mainly Shi'ite Muslim districts, security sources said.

Since then, more than 1,000 people have been killed across the country, building on a trend of intensifying violence that made last year Iraq's bloodiest since 2008, when sectarian warfare began to abate from its height.

Iraq Sees Highest Death Toll in Years -- Voice of America

Violence in Iraq reached its worst level in years in 2013, with one organization saying almost 9,500 people died in bombings and militant assaults across the country.

The United Nations and the Britain-based NGO, Iraq Body Count (IBC), say the number of deaths last year surpassed levels of violence last seen since 2008.

Violence in Iraq spiked in April after security forces staged a crackdown on a Sunni protest site in Hawijah triggering a series of clashes and revenge attacks.

2013 Was A Bloody Year In Iraq

A 2013 Disaster: Death Toll More Than Doubles in Iraq -- Antiwar

Violence Shows No Signs of Slowing Down as Year End

For a nation still reeling from a devastating multi-year US occupation, 2013 was definitely a year Iraqis would prefer to forget. Violence spiked more than two-fold nationwide over 2012 numbers, and the trend shows no signs of slowing down.

2013 started much the same as the past several years did, but a late April crackdown against Sunni protesters by the military sparked a series of strikes from Sunni militant factions, and coupled with spillover violence from Syria, the toll is back to the levels of 2007, the height of the US surge.

Violence Grips Iraq In Day Of Deadly Bombings -- Al Jazeera

At least 65 killed in string of attacks across the country, as most violent year since 2006-2007 bloodletting continues.

At least 65 people have been killed and over 100 wounded in a string of deadly attacks across Iraq, security sources told Al Jazeera.

Reuters news agency, citing police and and medical sources, reported later on Monday that two parked cars laden with explosives and a roadside bomb went off near a funeral tent and killed at least 24 more Shia Muslim pilgrims in Yusfiya, 20 kms south of Baghdad, which would bring the number of killed in the day's attacks to at least 89.

No one has claimed responsibility for Monday's bombings, but rebel groups frequently target civilians and members of the Iraqi security forces to undermine confidence in the country's Shia-led government and agitate sectarian tensions.

The attacks started in the town of Beiji, 180 kilometres north of Baghdad, where a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden vehicle into the main gate of the town police station.

Deadly Attacks Continue In Iraq

Series Of Deadly Attacks Strikes Iraq -- Al Jazeera

Daily attacks have shown no sign of abating, sparking fears that the nation is slipping back into all-out sectarian war.

Armed men have assaulted a mayor's office in a Sunni town just north of Baghdad, one of several attacks across Iraq that killed 19 people, according to officials.

Bombings also hit west Baghdad, as well as the predominantly Sunni cities of Abu Ghraib, Mosul on Tuesday.

Nine people were killed and 17 wounded in the suicide and mortar attack on the government compound that housed the mayor's office in the town of Tarmiya, police sources told Al Jazeera.

One attacker wearing an explosive belt blew himself up on Tuesday at the structure, which also houses the town's police station and other government offices.

Iraq Attacks Kill 41 As Toll Nears 6000 -- SKY News

A bombing at a market north of Baghdad was the deadliest in violence that killed 41 people Thursday, as the year's death toll topped 5,800 amid a surge in unrest.

The flare-up has prompted Baghdad to appeal for international help in fighting the country's worst bloodshed since 2008, just months before its first general election in four years.

Officials have voiced concern over a resurgent Al-Qaeda, emboldened by the civil war in neighbouring Syria, which has provided the jihadist network's front groups with increased room to plan and carry out attacks in Iraq.

The Iraqi capital was hit by a series of attacks, mostly by car bombs, in predominantly Shiite and commercial areas. At least 24 people have been killed and 87 wounded, Iraqi officials said, although media sources put the death toll much higher.

The bombings on Wednesday are the latest in a spike in violence in Iraq over the past months as rebels attempt to derail the Shiite-led government's struggle to stabilize the country.

Five of the blasts came from parked cars, while at least one was initiated by a remotely detonated bomb, police said. The deadliest attack occurred in the central Sadria neighborhood, where a car bomb exploded at an outdoor market, killing five shoppers and wounding 15 more, authorities said.
