Reuters: Iraq's Mosul dam could face catastrophic collapse: top U.S. general
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The U.S. military has a contingency plan to deal with a potential collapse of Mosul dam in northern Iraq which would be catastrophic, the top U.S. general in Iraq said on Thursday.
U.S. Army Lieutenant General Sean MacFarland said Iraqi authorities understood "the potential" for the collapse of the hydroelectric dam, whose foundation requires constant grouting to maintain structural integrity.
He said the military was working with the government on a plan to protect Iraqi civilians from the impact of a collapse, which would send a surge of water down the heavily populated Tigris river valley.

There are no limits on US generals when they talk. They are experts on everything, everywhere, including not merely warfare but also international politics and even dam collapse and contingency plans.
Riyadh Izeddin, the director general of the dam, said he had not been informed by the U.S. about any such contingency plan. “The Americans didn’t tell us anything,” he said, countering the coalition’s assessment that the structure is in serious danger. “There is nothing to be afraid of. There is nothing seriously wrong with the dam,” Izeddin said.
