After Mosul’s liberation from the Islamic State (IS) group, much of the western part of the Iraqi city still lies in ruins, with residents complaining of a lack of essential services and bodies still buried under the rubble.

Mosul, the IS group’s main stronghold in Iraq, was officially declared liberated on July 10, 2017 after months of fierce fighting.

In the east of the city, elements of normal life have begun to resurface, with people meeting in cafes again and enjoying live music venues.

But in West Mosul, where the IS group held out the longest, people still live and work among the rubble and are disappointed in the government's failure to rebuild

AP Report: Up To 11,000 Civilians Killed In The Battle To Free Mosul

Newsweek: Mosul Battle: U.S. Coalition, Iraq Killed Ten Times More Civilians Than They Claim

The number of civilians killed by the U.S.-led coalition's campaign against the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul was almost ten times higher than the coalition claims, a new investigation has found.

According to an Associated Press count, which cited the reports of grave diggers, morgue workers and volunteers, between 9,000 and 11,000 Mosul residents were killed in the nine-month battle to liberate the city that ISIS held for three years.

Of those killed, Iraqi or coalition forces were responsible for at least 3,200 civilian deaths in airstrikes or ground fire conducted from the beginning of the offensive in October 2016 to July 2017. The coalition says it is responsible for only 326 of the deaths, but also claims that it does not have adequate resources on the ground to investigate the total number of deaths.

One hot and sticky evening in July, in the dying days of the battle for Mosul, a group of Iraqi army officers sat for dinner in a requisitioned civilian house not far from the ruins of the mosque where, three years earlier, the leader of Islamic State had announced the creation of a new caliphate.

At the head of the table sat the commander, large and burly, flanked by his two majors. The rest of the officers were seated according to rank, with the youngest officers placed at the far end. The commander, who was trying to lose weight, had banned his cook from serving meat at mealtimes, but tonight was a special occasion. The day before, his unit had liberated another block of streets in the Old City without suffering any casualties.

VOA: Returnees to Old Mosul Find Little Besides Rubble, Lingering Danger

MOSUL, IRAQ — “All you can hear at night is the sound of broken doors flapping in the wind,” says Abd Elaam, a 50-year-old furniture maker. “Even soldiers stay indoors after dark.”

Elaam is currently one of the very few civilians living in Old Mosul, an ancient neighborhood shattered by the battle to recapture the city from Islamic State militants. Like many families that survived IS rule, he says, his resources are completely exhausted by the war and he has nowhere else to go.

Other families trickle in by day, looking to repair their broken homes or recover the bodies of their dead loved ones. But even during daylight hours, the neighborhood is dangerous, riddled with bombs and an unknown number of militants hiding out in the vast network of tunnels under the tightly-packed buildings and piles of rubble. The level of destruction has been compared to World War II Dresden.

DW: German authorities probe identities of women found in Mosul tunnel

German authorities are trying to find out if a 16-year-old who converted to Islam and disappeared from her home near Dresden last year is one of 20 women found in a tunnel in Iraq. She had been under investigation.

Five German women being held by security forces in Iraq are reportedly part of a group of 20 female fighters with the so-called "Islamic State," (IS) apprehended in Mosul's beleaguered ancient city last week. In addition to the German nationals, the group included three Russian, three Turkish and two Canadian citizens, according to first reports.

However, information from Mosul can not be verified and Iraqi counter-terrorism official, Haidar al-Araji denied there was a 16-year-old in the group. Another report suggested a teenager arrested was
not German but of Slavic origin, possibly Russian. She had been taken to hospital for treatment to burns.

The young woman was initially taken to be a member of the Yazidi community as she spoke no Arabic.

Al-Araji claimed all of the twenty were "suicidal women who were on standby to blow themselves up among Iraqi forces."

Exclusive: Many bodies are still buried under the rubble and the level of human suffering is 'immense', a top Kurdish official reading from latest intelligence reports tells Patrick Cockburn in the last of his special series on the last days of the caliphate.

More than 40,000 civilians were killed in the devastating battle to retake Mosul from Isis, according to intelligence reports revealed exclusively to The Independent - a death toll far higher than previous estimates.

Residents of the besieged city were killed by Iraqi ground forces attempting to force out militants, as well as by air strikes and Isis fighters, according to Kurdish intelligence services.

Hoshyar Zebari, until recently a senior minister in Baghdad, told The Independent that many bodies "are still buried under the rubble". "The level of human suffering is immense," he said.

The recapture of Mosul has brought with it the torture and mass execution of "Islamic State" fighters and their families. The government is looking the other way, and it seems the US-led anti-IS coalition is too.

Iraq's anti-terror unit last week reportedly captured foreign "Islamic State" (IS) fighter Linda W., a 16-year-old from the eastern German town of Pulsnitz. Information thus far has been contradictory. One thing, however, is clear: If she was among those caught, she can consider herself lucky to be alive.

A number of women in the terrorist militia wore explosive belts and at least 2,000 people were killed by coalition bombs in Mosul, according to the nongovernmental organization (NGO) Airwars, which monitors civilian casualties resulting from international airstrikes in Syria, Libya and Iraq. Furthermore, Iraqi forces have been credibly said not only to be torturing and executing IS fighters, but also their families.

Washington Post: After Islamic State defeat, a daunting search for bodies in Mosul’s rubble

MOSUL, Iraq — The streets of Mosul’s Old City are littered with bodies, tangled between shattered stones and remnants of the lives they left behind.

In the baking summer heat, exhausted rescue crews are now sifting through the debris of the toughest battle against the Islamic State in what became its final redoubt in the city.

As Iraqi ground troops, U.S.-led coalition jets and Islamic State militants pulverized the Old City’s winding maze of streets, thousands of civilians were caught in the crossfire.

But the area is now deserted, its inhabitants evacuated to houses, camps or prison cells across the province in recent months.

ISIS has been driven from from its former stronghold, but the city is in ruin, and the scourge of Islamic terrorism persists in the region.

‘Something’s going on in the Old City,” said the Iraqi fixer, jumping off the phone with another fixer already in Mosul.We were a two-vehicle SUV convoy, mostly journalists and fixers, headed into the city, where, on Sunday, Iraqi prime minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory — perhaps an ominous gesture. Other pockets of ISIS remain in Iraq, such as in Talafar, and of course in Syria. On a national holiday in Iraq, many Iraqi soldiers were casualties. “Maybe that report about the 300 Daesh was right.”

The University of Mosul is among the first of ISIS’s cultural casualties one sees on entering East Mosul, where many residents still live. It was here in 2014 that Mahmoud al-Asali, a Muslim law professor, was reportedly killed for condemning ISIS’s treatment of Christians. It was here that the mosque built over Jonah’s tomb was destroyed in a campaign of cultural genocide, which preceded a campaign of genocide against Yazidis, Christians, and others.

Erbil: A number of Iraqi military personnel have been suspended and an investigation launched after Human Rights Watch has condemned videos circulating on social media purportedly showing Iraqi forces killing and beating suspected Islamic State fighters in Mosul.

The videos were posted to Facebook earlier this week, a day after Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared "total victory" in Mosul, according to The Associated Press. On Thursday, a spokesman for Iraq's Defence Ministry said he had not seen the videos but that such incidents will not be tolerated.

Newsweek: US Military Still Bombing ISIS After Iraq Declares Defeat of Islamic State in Mosul

U.S. and Iraqi forces are still actively fighting remaining elements of the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) in Iraq days after the war-torn country's leadership announced it had effectively defeated the jihadis.

In its latest report, the Defense Department said Wednesday that the U.S.-led international coalition had launched five airstrikes against ISIS positions Tuesday in Mosul and Qarayya, two days after Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory over the ultraconservative Sunni Muslim group. Iraqi ground forces and allied militias have also faced resistance in Mosul and other pockets of ISIS support south of Mosul, where the hardline militants are making a last stand to defend what remains of their so-called caliphate in a country they once claimed nearly half of.

Reuters: Iraqi PM declares victory over Islamic State in Mosul

Iraq's prime minister declared victory over Islamic State in Mosul on Monday, three years after the militants seized the city and made it the stronghold of a "caliphate" they said would take over the world.

"I announce from here the end and the failure and the collapse of the terrorist state of falsehood and terrorism which the terrorist Daesh announced from Mosul," Haider al-Abadi said in a speech shown on state television, using an Arabic acronym for Islamic State.

A 100,000-strong alliance of Iraqi government units, Kurdish Peshmerga fighters and Shi'ite militias launched the offensive to recapture the northern city from the militants in October, with key air and ground support from a U.S.-led coalition.

Reuters: Iraq's Abadi to declare Mosul victory, few pockets of resistance

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi was poised to declare victory over Islamic State in Mosul on Monday as only a few dozen militants put up resistance in the city where their leader declared a caliphate three years ago.

Gunfire and explosions could be heard as the U.S.-led coalition pounded the remaining few Islamic State positions.

"They won't declare victory until the area is fully secured," said Iraqi army officer Firas Abdel Qassim. The militants were still controlling a small patch, he said.

While defeat in Iraq's second largest city will deal a heavy blow to Islamic State, the group controls several cities and towns south and west of Mosul.

Islamic State is also under heavy pressure in its operational headquarters in the Syrian city of Raqqa and its self-proclaimed caliphate that once straddled the two countries is crumbling.

Washington Post: Islamic State mounts final stand for Mosul as bloodied and dazed civilians flee

MOSUL, Iraq — Iraqi forces edged through the final roads and alleyways of Islamic State territory in the city of Mosul on Tuesday as dazed and malnourished civilians were evacuated to safety.

The militants are cornered in a sliver of land in the western Old City, and commanders say they expect to declare victory against the Islamic State here by the end of the week.

Gen. Sami Al-Aridhi, a commander with the Counter Terrorism Service, said his troops were advancing on foot through the Old City’s winding maze of streets.

“It’s a battle inside alleyways against an enemy that commits to no ethics,” he said.

Elite Iraqi rapid-response units were calling in U.S.-led coalition airstrikes at close quarters Tuesday as Iraqi special forces moved door to door, evacuating civilians who had cowered in their homes through the final, terrifying assault.

Dozens of those families crossed the Tigris River in the beds of pickup trucks as the temperature soared to 122 degrees Fahrenheit.

Iraqis prepared on Sunday to celebrate an expected victory over Islamic State in Mosul, just blocks away from battles raging in the last few districts where the militants are dug in.

Troops tied white banners and Iraqi flags to lamp posts and damaged buildings including the Hadba minaret, which the jihadists blew up in June along with the adjoining Grand al-Nuri Mosque, as air strikes and mortars rained down nearby.

It was from al-Nuri's pulpit that Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared his caliphate three years ago.

Authorities are planning a week of nationwide celebrations, according to a government statement, and Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi is expected to visit Mosul to formally declare victory.
