Dave Majumdar, National Interest: Undersea Crisis: China Will Have Nearly Twice as Many Subs as the U.S.
The United States Navy needs more attack submarines to meet its global commitments. Worldwide, the service is only able to provide the Pentagon’s regional combatant commanders with less than two-thirds the number of submarines that they need.
“The threats in the undersea environment continue to go up,” Vice Adm. Joseph Mulloy, the service’s deputy chief of naval operations for integration of capabilities and resources told the House Armed Services Committee’s seapower and projection forces subcommittee on February 25.
The U.S. Navy—which has roughly 52 attack submarines—is on track to have 41 attack boats by 2029. The Chinese, meanwhile would have “at least 70, and they’re building,” Mulloy said. “You get back into the whole quality versus quantity issue, but at the same time the Russians are also building. . . and they build much higher-end submarines.”

There is no conceivable end to the malarkey the Pentagon spreads to justify the vast expenditures on more worthless toys at a time when the US quality-of-lfe ratings (especially for the unfortunates at the bottom) and the US national infrastructure rank far below those of other developed nations.
There are no real threats to the US nation so some have to be dreamed up, and they do it. Buy hey, there's so much money in it.
There are no real threats because of the strength of the military take that away and you create the threat. Catch 22
@ fazman
There is no threat to the US nation because Canada and Mexico are benign, not because of a million-man (active & reserve) army, etc. Recent history has shown that a strong military leads to ill-advised imperialism, not any threat avoidance. In fact non-military threats have increased as a result.
Currently, the four so-called threats to the US are not threats at all. Russia, China,Iran and North Korea are concocted US threats, not real ones. The latest is: China aggression in the South China Sea is a threat to the US. --Give me a break. It's pap for the proles.
