Here are a few things the West can do against Moscow’s potent combo of special forces and electronic warfare
The Ukrainian soldiers peered over the cold dirt edge of their trench. The artillery had abated, but the whine of a nearby spotter UAV promised its imminent return. In the distance, they could see camouflaged spetsnaz moving into position with suppressed Vintorez marksman rifles. Looking at his radio, a lieutenant dared to hope. “Aleksei, you see this? Radio’s working. Maybe a break in the jamming.” “Is that really a good thing?” his sergeant responded. “Go ahead and call, that’s what they want. The Russians will hear you first and send their thermobaric regards. That is if the spetsnaz don’t get here first.” The young officer slumped. His comms gear was useless; he and his men were cut off and alone.
Much has been written about Russia’s innovative concepts of operations in Ukraine and Syria, variously dubbed “hybrid” or “non-linear” war, but specific tactics have received far less scrutiny than they deserve. A look, in particular, at Russia’s use of electronic warfare (EW) and special operations forces (SOF) suggests ways that U.S. and other NATO forces might prepare to counter them.

It's very difficult to believe there will be peace in the Ukraine given the right nationalist attitude prevailing these days. Belief in peace while outsiders dream and scheme of the place to be a battleground or staging area for attacks on their foes is near impossible.

Anyone who thinks that they can predict what a modern interstate war between great powers will look like is delusional.
We have absolutely no idea, truly, what the next major war on the scale of WWII might actually look like. It will be fought with tools never before used against one another; basic commodities of survival will be used as weapons against entire populations on a scale impossible just a generation ago; technologies have the ability to alter virtual landscapes and media in a way that would have made Geobbels orgasmic...
A modern great powers war will be unlike anything in history; incomparable and incomprehensible.
For those of us who grew up during the Cold War, nuclear annihilation is a concept that can be understood...ALL the other terrifying possibilities are safely within the realm of fantasy and science fiction. A heartless novelist has as much insight to the future of armed conflict as does a morally constrained General.
