Afghan Soldiers Desert And Are Now Joining The Ranks Of The Taliban In Helmand Province

CNN: Afghan soldiers desert as Taliban threaten key Helmand capital

Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN)Sometimes you know a war's going badly when your enemy is right in front of you.

About 3 miles outside the southern city of Lashkar Gah, Afghan soldiers can see a white flag. It's not one of surrender -- quite the opposite.

The flag belongs to the Taliban, and shows exactly how close the militant group is to the capital of Helmand province.

Despite Afghan government assurances that the army can hold and retake ground, the strategic province that hundreds of NATO troops -- who have been in the country for the last 15 years -- died fighting for is closer than ever to falling to the Taliban.

Update: NATO trained Afghan troops swell Taliban ranks (New Europe)

WNU Editor: The above video is very sobering. Billions spent training Afghan soldiers that now fight for the Taliban .... this is everyone's worst nightmare.

A problem that has been going on for years. About a third of the Afghan army trainees deserted with weapons uniforms and training to go over to or maybe back to the Taliban.

A US soldier who had been in Afghanistan at the start and was transferred to Iraq said that on his return to Afghanistan a couple of years later he was amazed at how much the Taliban had learned about battle strategy in such a short time.

At least one faction in the world is benefiting from US training. They would save a lot of money and effort if they just trained the Taliban directly.

Entirely predictable IMHO. Shifting alliances are all about tribal deals with the strong horse. As the world as seen, Obama's America is retreating from 70 years of activist American statecraft.. All ME countries have to assume the region is being shaped in Moscow, Beijing, Tel Aviv, Tehran and By the Saudi's with much less American influence. The Afghans who aren't dealing with the Talib are dealing with these other actors while pocketing American dollars.

I can hardly wait until the records showing the accounts where the Afghan opium/heroin money is being laundered are leaked. The direct profits gobbled up from the Afghan trough and the accounts of the contractors and NGOs involved also need to be released.
The war doesn't end because the U.S. and friends don't want it to.

For far too long, Afghanistan has continued to be the goose that laid the golden egg.
