Hillary Clinton Calls 'Fake News' A Threat To Democracy

CBS: Hillary Clinton warns about the dangers of fake news

Hillary Clinton on Thursday warned about the dangers of fake news and said that leaders in both the private and public sectors need to step up to protect democracy.

The 2016 Democratic president nominee, former senator and first lady made the comment during a ceremony recognizing retiring Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, on Capitol Hill.

“The epidemic of malicious fake news and false propaganda that flooded social media over the past year -- it’s now clear that so-called fake news can have real world consequences,” Clinton said.

WNU Editor: U.S. conservatives like Rush Limbaugh have been calling the internet and social media a sewer for years .... but they never got any publicity. Now .... it is news because Hillary Clinton made a speech? Would the main stream media be doing this story if she won .... probably not. And speaking of the main stream media .... their bias and slanted news coverage has been exposed to a level never seen before in modern day America .... so where is their credibility? That is why I tell everyone that if you really want to be informed .... you must take the time to read the news from multiple sources .... keep an open mind .... and always be sceptical.

WNU,

Your editor comment is absolutely spot on!! I've tried to read the news and cross read from multiple sources for many years now. I find this yields a more complete knowledge and challenges preconceptions and more is learne. I'd rather challenge my preconceptions BEFORE they challenge me.

I find it humorous beyond measure that Mrs. Clinton would complain about "fake news." She benefited more from "fake news" than any person in American history ever has!! Were it not for "fake news" she'd have lost at least 47 states. She's the last person who should be complaining about such things!!

As for Rush Limbaugh, very few in America actually take him seriously. His impact actual impact on American politics is zero. While his few devoted followers may keep the advertisers happy, his impact on the American political system is negligible.

Well said WNU. Irony is this push to destroy "fake news" from big medias side will undoubtedly be directed against the traditional American conservative and marginalizing it via social media censorship and other influential left controlled platforms.

A "threat to democracy"? I guess it takes one to know one.

You take the things that you are well versed or expert in then watch the media make a report on the issue and watch how many errors they make. Now think about all the other news story you see that you are not well versed in and you can only imagine that they are just hacking the story to pieces in the same way. I guess this must be that I'm just getting old but in the last few years I have really taken this theory to heart.

Clearly these fake news stories are a threat to democracy and the only way to save it is for the media to be an arbiter of truth and censor anything that doesn't match their high standards and opinions. Stop trying to think critically and just believe as your betters tell you too.

I haven't believed a damn thing from the MSM "over here" for years let alone the Rushs, Jones, Maddows etc. I agree with the Editor, get as much as I can, from as many sources as I can and separate the wheat from the chaff.

Fake news Mrs. Clinton?

Do tell?

You mean like Qadaffi's Viagra rape battalions?

Russia's "invasion" of the Crimea?

Didn't you vote for the invasion of Iraq based on the flimsiest of fake news? Oh, that was a "mistake".

Mrs. Clinton, you and yours with your constant lying, hysterics, hypocricy, straight up s--tty policies and phoney moral theatrics have ushered in what may very well prove to be the biggest disaster America has faced yet. A member of thr establishment just got elected on an anti-establishment platform. You're bummed because you were out-lied.

You lost the election because you have no credibility whatsoever other than the fact that you could be counted on tell the same old lies. In a contest of Right versus More Right, the latter's lies resonated. It's a sad statement when horrible wins over bad. I honestly thought you had it in the bag, but the more I watch you, the more I realize the More Right could have run a German Shepherd that knew when to bark on cue and beat you. You suck that bad.

The real not fake news, however, is that over 40% of eligible voters did not cast a ballot for you or your opponent. That's the popular vote no news, fake or otherwise, really wants to explore in depth.

These "leaders" and their minions crowing about the dangers of fake news or the "left wing" MSM are like maggots crying over garbage.

The MSM and fake news with their Benghazi death marches etc. and Democrats in Jokerface etc. respectfully promoted the Clintons and Trumps to where they are. Without media cooperation, they wouldn't have even been in the contest.

That either of them was considered for the president of the world's most powerful nation, or any nation for that matter, says more about the state of so_called democracy than it does about the media.

WNU,

You have begun to drink to much of the predominant right wing cool aid, according to this particular comment.

You always share truthful or relevant information. And I agree, we all must read multiple well sourced news outlets to determine, what is the exact flavor that most closely resembles the truth. It can be hard to determine. For me, I have used the Apple News App and specific sources such as yourself to get a range of stories on the topics of my interest.

Speaking of censorship and limiting information, I believe that the Apple News App aggregator does a good job of filtering out the bullshit for me.

I feel like I am never touched by the so called 'fake news'.

Where is this predominant right wing media source you speak of? Just curious

The above comments have got me thinking.
For the past few years I have been asked numerous times on what are my sources for news. I am busy right now .... but during the Christmas holidays I will update the blog/news roll that I have on the left side of this blog .... and list my sources (There are about 100). They range from Russia (RT, TASS, Sputnik) and China (Global Times, Xinhuanet), to the Middle East (Al Jazeera, Haaretz), to Europe (DW, France 24) etc. The list is long and diverse. but regular readers know that I have no problems reading a story from National Review .... and a few minutes later reading Mother Jones .... and posting both beside each other.
I also read and scan everything that I post. No machine aggregator or software help here. There is a human behind every link posted.

Why aren't I ahead 50 Points", because your a loser.Ha Ha.

Fake new IS a threat to Democracy, but not because of the lies. ALL information is useful - even false information, because it still tells you something about the source. The problem is that some people are willing to believe anything they are told simply because it fits in with their preconceived and predetermined narratives based on their own emotional and political bias...those people, out of laziness or agenda or ignorance, give disproportionate power to false-hoods - they are as much to blame for their own closed minds and deliberate propagation of lies as are the original liars themselves. That turns people into tools, and THAT is a threat to Democracy.

I agree with the WNU editor: multiple sources, skepticism and open-minds are the only way to sort the information into something useful.
