DW: Venezuela holds military exercises as US extends 'national emergency' order

Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro has overseen military exercises, claiming the country is under threat of invasion. The US has extended an executive order declaring a national emergency in the South American state.

The exercises have involved more than 76,000 troops and half a million civilians. They have been held across the oil-rich state on land, sea and in the air. On Saturday, the drills included urban defense and protection of coastal oil refineries.

The aim was to resist what the socialist government sees as a US-backed plot to overthrow it. State television showed images of soldiers camoflaged as bushes shouting "socialist fatherland," as their commanders held Russian-made military equipment.

Maduro is a typically dictator, Trump is a completely "unknown". Well, we shall see.

Maduro is an anti-globalization populist, with elements of Mesito Nationalism, Socialism, anti-Corporatism and anti- Ogliarchism, most of which is faux.

Maduro is a good socialist/communist.

He is the legitimate successor to Chavez.

There is nothing different between Chavez and Maduro except that Chavez had more charisma.

Maduro is just taking the revolution to its next logical step.

JabberJay is pretty much a stupid hoser, who does not understand sociology and the arc of these things.

Jac,

I've been to Venezuela. I lived in south America for some time. I know people from there.

Venezuela has direct flights to Tehran.

Maduro took over with the blessing of the socialist party in Venezuela.

The only ones to blame are socialists. Those in power and those that support the cause as voters, activists, media etc.

Maduro is the legitimate successor of Chavez. Like I said before, this is just the next logical step La RevoluciĆ³n.

GWB did not support this. Cuba (the Castros) and by extension the old USSR did.

For his part Bubba Clinton ignored Chavez. So he did his part. Likewise the boy King Obama ignored Venezuela.

This was one even pull by the Left.
