PRESIDENT TRUMP’S NATIONAL security adviser, Gen. Michael Flynn, was forced to resign on Monday night as a result of getting caught lying about whether he discussed sanctions in a December telephone call with a Russian diplomat. The only reason the public learned about Flynn’s lie is because someone inside the U.S. government violated the criminal law by leaking the contents of Flynn’s intercepted communications.
In the spectrum of crimes involving the leaking of classified information, publicly revealing the contents of SIGINT — signals intelligence — is one of the most serious felonies. Journalists (and all other nongovernmental citizens) can be prosecuted under federal law for disclosing classified information only under the narrowest circumstances; reflecting how serious SIGINT is considered to be, one of those circumstances includes leaking the contents of intercepted communications, as defined this way by 18 § 798 of the U.S. Code:

WNU Editor: Glen Greenwald's above post and Eli Lake's commentary below are must reads. I find it interesting that the reporters and columnists that I follow when it comes to matters of U.S. intelligence are all suspicious on the role that the U.S. intel community may have played in the downfall of National Security adviser Michael Flynn. And while I am not privy to the information that they have .... I just aggregate the news and give my opinion once in a while .... they are all universally pointing their fingers at the U.S. agencies responsible for monitoring and gathering communications as the culprits behind this leak. But it is Glen Greenwald's observation/analysis that struck a chord in me when he said that the Washington Post reporter who broke the story .... David Ignatius .... has built his career on repeating what his CIA sources tell him. Indeed .... I have been posting stories by David Ignatius on this blog for years .... and his sources have always been the U.S. intel community (which is after-all why I have always linked to him). Case in point .... At Least Someone In The Mainstream Media Is Raising Questions On Benghazi (October 31, 2012)

"It has not been confirmed that Flynn is a Russian mole or not but he certainly looks like one. Worse of all, Trump looks like a president who allowed a compromised senior-level intelligence official infiltrate the White House. It makes the U.S. look vulnerable."

I suppose "mole" may depend upon how one defines the term. Personally I must admit had I been POTUS and knowing my top priority is negotiating an end to Cold War 2 I would have found someone who is on friendly terms with Russian leaders an attractive choice as a top advisor. After all, in order to facilitate negotiations, we need someone they will trust to help facilitate things.
Now if Western Europeans want to carry on with Cold War 2 for whatever reason. By all means CARRY ON!! LEAVE US OUT OF IT!! We DO NOT need it!!
