NDTV/Press Trust India: China To Downsize Army To Under A Million In Biggest Troop Cut: Report

While the People's Liberation Army (PLA) will downsize, the number of troops in the PLA Navy, PLA Strategic Support Force and the PLA Rocket Force will be increased, while the PLA Air Force's active service personnel will remain the same.

BEIJING: China will downsize its 2.3 million-strong army, the world's largest, to under one million in the biggest troop reduction in its history as part of a restructuring process, an official Chinese daily said.

The People's Liberation Army (PLA) will increase the numbers of other services, including navy and missile forces, the PLA Daily, the official newspaper of the Chinese military, reported.

Jun Zhengping Studio, a Chinese social WeChat account run by the newspaper published an article yesterday on structural reform in China's military, saying that "the old military structure, where the army accounts for the vast majority, will be replaced after the reform".

You want a one million men strong insurgency?
Because that's how you get a one million men strong insurgency.

The Chinese have engineered their own demographic bomb set to detonate over the next 30 years. Cutting loose another 1.5 million males - idle, with no chance of finding a female mate - just spiked the fuse.

A very odd thing to do considering the current climate. Must be some logic behind this.

That's an interesting angle to look at it at... when you really and I mean REALLY think about it the implications of 1.5 million trained killers have nothing to do is a recipe for disaster. Also on a tangent thinking about this type of stuff always brings me to the conclusion that with the way things are going in our world and the path our leaders seem to be going down there is no war around the fact that there will be another Great War. I mean why would the major powers of this world necessitate thier stockpiles of weapons and soldiers if they weren't planning to use them? Then the thought of all those men in China hypothetically with nothing to do just makes you say why not just fight to oblivion in this Great War over going to some greasy gutter factory to make nicknacks for the very people you were prepared to fight against. It's a strange time to be alive!!!

China's Military is a mix of conscripts doing National Service and a smaller core of "professionals", "technicians", Officers and Senior NCO's.

Conscript's are a weak point in Modern Militairies, because they are barely proficient in basic skills by the end of their conscription and while they form a large reserve afterwards, despite annual retraining, their skills actually deteriorate.

In NATO Militaries, it takes two years of training to turn a group of raw recruits into a barely competent Company able to operate in Brigaides.

Conscripts are cheap, but they can only be used in a National War.

Professionals are expensive, but over their careers they master all the basic skills, and master many more technical skills.

Professional's can also be "used" irregardless of the Political environment at home, because they "knew what they were signing up for".

China's downsizing and professionalizing their military to:
- a) massively increase their effectiveness and efficiency
- b) possibly have an Expeditionary Force than can be used in Wars of Choice abroad.
