Reuters: Exclusive: Russia used Facebook to try to spy on Macron campaign - sources
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Russian intelligence agents attempted to spy on President Emmanuel Macron's election campaign earlier this year by creating phony Facebook personas, according to a U.S. Congressman and two other people briefed on the effort.
About two dozen Facebook accounts were created to conduct surveillance on Macron campaign officials and others close to the centrist former financier as he sought to defeat far-right nationalist Marine Le Pen and other opponents in the two-round election, the sources said. Macron won in a landslide in May.
Facebook said in April it had taken action against fake accounts that were spreading misinformation about the French election. But the effort to infiltrate the social networks of Macron officials has not previously been reported.

Update #2: Facebook helped blunt Russian meddling in French elections (Endgadget)
WNU editor: When you scroll down this Reuters report you find the following gem ....
.... Russia has repeatedly denied interfering in the French election by hacking and leaking emails and documents. U.S. intelligence agencies told Reuters in May that hackers with connections to the Russian government were involved, but they did not have conclusive evidence that the Kremlin ordered the hacking.
They admit that they have no evidence .... but that is OK .... we blame Russia anyway .... and the rest of the news media and pundit class follows.
When I was growing up people who thought like this were laughed out of the room .... today .... government policies, news reporting, intelligence analysis .... it is all based on opinions, one's prejudices, and what do they feel at the moment. And to back their point of view .... rush to find like-minded people and point to them and say that they must be right because these people think like me.

I think your editor comment is spot on. I've long known US (un)intelligence to be grossly incompetent. Now we can add ideological blindness as well. Such ideological blindness often times makes otherwise smart people incompetent. When we add incompetence and ideological blindness this is a REALLY BAD combination. As I've said before POTUS, if he or any other leader are serious about advancing US interests, would be unwise to take anything US (un)intelligence comes up with seriously. These people and the Sunday morning comics I used to read in the local newspaper have a great deal in common except the funnies knew they were just that. The folks in US (un)intelligence actually think they are smart and capable!!
The Russians have so far refrained from responding to such unprovoked attacks because they understand the huge benefits to both the US and Russia that cordial relations would bring in terms of security, economic, and scientific advancements. DJT being a business minded person likely understands this as well.
Unfortunately Congress is either bat sh!t crazy out of their ever loving minds or they are so afraid of Hillary they will do most anything to avoid incurring the wrath of the Clintons even if it means placing America in grave peril. For now, I am thinking these people are simply bat sh!t crazy.
Why is Reuters pushing such nonsense? Reuters is not an American people nor have they historically answered to America. Perhaps they've gone crazy as well. I've already explained what is going to happen and why here and elsewhere what is going to happen if Europe is force to choose between America and Russia. They are going to choose Russia.
I thought DJT was the one who was destroying US "alliances." At least that is what the media told me. Pass these proposed sanctions and actually try and implement them and these "allies" are going to be flipped to enemies in short order. If the bill, as is, comes to his DJT has only one choice. That is veto the bill. So his veto is overridden. So he is accused of colluding with the Russians or whatever. Even though he has the right to veto a bill and Congress has the right to override, say he gets arrested. So what. There comes a time when men and women of good conscience and character must do that which is right in the face of stiff opposition.
Finally!

The obvious solution is to shut down Facebook and fine Zuckerberg 10X the worth of Facebook for endangering the national security of France and who knows how many other countries.
