U.S. Senator McCain Slams President Trump On Afghanistan. Threatens To Present His Own Strategy

CNBC: McCain backs general, threatens to craft own Afghanistan strategy if Trump can't in time

President Donald Trump, frustrated that the U.S. is "losing" in Afghanistan, is considering replacing the American military commander leading the campaign, according to a report.

According to NBC News, the president during a July 19 meeting "repeatedly suggested" to his military advisors that they should replace Army Gen. John Nicholson, the current top U.S. commander of coalition forces in Afghanistan. It cited senior administration officials.

Previously, Nicholson requested the administration increase the number of U.S. soldiers fighting the battle against the Taliban in Afghanistan. Nicholson formally assumed command of the U.S. forces in Afghanistan in March 2016.

WNU is correct.

One might say in the 1st 2 or 3 years, he was waiting to see how it would shake out.

One might say he did not want to go against a Republican president out of respect (or something) or maybe after 2004 he was preparing to run and did not want to appear to stab the sitting Republican president in the back.

It does not explain the Obama years, when no progress was made and eventually progress was lost.

Perhaps. But I recall shortly after Trump took office he gave the generals one month to present him with a winning plan. Now we are told at this site (1) there is no plan (2) McCain will offer a plan if there is none.
The article in fact notes that we have not really done well under 3 presidents and that, AS, would include Obama.

Fabius thinks that President Trump will still sign-off on the Pentagon's strategy on Afghanistan. Months ago I would say yes .... now .... I am not sure. I hope that Fabius is wrong .... because from I am reading (and posting on this blog) .... I am not optimistic that the pentagon really knows what needs to be done.

Sometimes political and strategic realities cause the plans to change, kind of like when Obama said he'd close Guantanamo. By doing nothing to this point, Trump has essentially settled for the status quo. I'm confident he'll decide on a new direction for the Afghan war in the coming months.

John McCain...if you have a plan, lets hear it. But I doubt he has anything new...I'll guess he'd like to do nothing but increase troop levels...that's some groundbreaking stuff there

McCain needs to be recalled.

A recall election is what the pugnacious brat needs.

From 2000, he had education reform with Ted Kennedy. Years later Obama comes along and say it is still broke. So what did white privilege boy do?

McCain also attempted to force amnesty on us. Not a wall and then amnesty, but amnesty now, promises of a wall, and no delivery.

McCain ran a terrible presidential campaign. True the press are lying sacks of excrement and shill for Democrats, but McCain ran a lousy campaign. Near its end he said he did know anything about finance.

When it comes to campaign finance McCain would make a Tokugawa shogun proud.

Not to be mean but realistic but I looked up what kind of cancer McCain has, and it is not good, maybe 1-2 years left tops. McCain is just running his mouth along with his dofus daughter. If you believe what he says it sounds like he wants to go to war with everyone including Russia. Just wait him out, he will not be in Congress much longer.

Recall; a senator one does not like though voters in his state continue to reelect him? nah. not the way democracy works
Anon: Guantanomo base not closed because GOP would not allow it
change of plans, but of couse not announced. That is good excuse for any thing that goes wrong so as to get off the hook
Seems: Generals to handle it. Now Why have generals not made it work?

Sorry Fred.
When President Obama had his super Democrat majorities in 2009 he could easily have closed it down. He choose not to because of politics. Something that even I predicted in 2009.

Which daughter?

Wait let me guess

Meghan

"She attended Columbia University, where she earned her bachelor's degree in art history. McCain originally planned to become a music journalist and interned at Newsweek and Saturday Night Live."

Meghan is certainly the most useless of the McCain children. I believe McCain has 1 or 2 sons in the military; they certainly are not useless.
